When is it Ok to Give Up a Pawn?
I’ve had a couple games where I’ll analyze them afterwards and notice a huge swing in the evaluation when I give up a pawn. Usually I do so to get some kind of initiative, but the engine seems to think it’s a huge mistake and even at times flags it as a blunder. Is there any rule of thumb I could use to know when it’s ok to give up a pawn and…

For me, if it sets up a nice tactic, or gets you a solid attack immediately, then sac a pawn or a piece even. It’s either a brilliant move, or a blunder! If you get checkmate, it’s brilliant regardless of what stockfish thinks. We mere humans can’t think 20+ moves deep.
-
Yeah I think at my ELO (1200 rapid on Chess.com) there has to be a very tangible benefit like you’re saying. The engine really seems to dislike it when it happens in the middle and end game so perhaps just being extra careful then will pay off.
-
When you review your game, try finishing against the bot (set the strength at 2000 or more) after you make the pawn move and sometimes you can see the idea. Also using the hint helps. A lot of times it’s a positional move that ends up worse several moves later. It’s over my head of course.

Skipping lessons of the Winning with White and KID courses
Hello, the courses are great, but I got a question.
When I want to go to a particular lesson, it says “Please go back and complete the previous lesson”. Is there a way to skip some of the lessons and go straight to a particular lesson? It works for the Breaking 1500 but not for the Winning with White and KID. Thanks!

I had the same problem

New here, hello everyone.
Just got the course and I’m loving it so far. I just started playing chess about 6 months ago. I learned how the pieces move when I was a kid, but never really played. I play very well in longer format games, still learning to do it fast. I was told puzzles are the way. Has anyone else played so many puzzles that you start back at wood on chess.com?
-
I generally do the daily puzzle at chess.com every day, Monday puzzles are typically very easy, then they get more difficult throughout the week. Additionally I typically do a puzzle rush and a few other puzzles every day trying to get better at tactics pattern recognition. I’m currently in the stone tier of puzzles, not sure how the…

Hi Ryan, welcome! Glad to hear you’re loving the course so far and that you’ve recently gotten back into chess!
It’s great that you’re seeing the importance of tactics and puzzles, they’re the best way to improve your pattern recognition and tactical awareness, which is a major factor in breaking past 1500 ELO.
When you start doing many…

I thought I was good at tactics. I have 258,524 points for puzzles currently. I’m learning fast, but now that I’m most of the way through module 4, I’m seeing that I still have a lot to learn. I started doing custom puzzles for a specific tactic on chess.com I figured after 100 of them I should have the concept burned in. Is there a better way?

Can't find pgn files in kings indian course
Hello, I am struggling to find PGN files for the King’s Indian Defense course. Please assist. Thank you very much.

You have to click on one of the Module links in the sidebar for the KID course. So for the Classical Variation you click directly on the Module 2: Classical Variation link (currently takes you to https://chessvibes.net/courses/the-kings-indian-defense/lessons/module-2-classical-variation-5-nf3-6-be2/). Just clicking on the arrow next to the…

Hi Vamshi, thanks for your question! For the King’s Indian Defense, the PGNs are included at every Module page with PGNs for that Module, as well as each related Lesson page. For example, go to Module 2, then click the link to download the PGN (1st screenshot attached); or go to Lesson 2.7, scroll past the video, then click the link to…
