In Lesson 4.11 Zwischenzug master tactic 12:01, Why would black move Be4 to attack Whites Queen to start when Whites Queen was hanging in the first place. Shouldn’t Black have just played Qxc2 and take whites Queen?
Charles and Anthony R4 Comments-
If black took white’s queen to start then white would recapture with their bishop and Be4 would no longer be possible. Black wanted to take white’s bishop first to lure the night away and open up the rook for a big trade of pieces.

Not sure you are looking at the same thing I am. When Qxe2, Black takes an undefended queen. There is no bishop to recapture, it can only take Bxf6 the black dark bishop Not taking the Queen and moving the bishop to Be4 makes Black go from -8.1 to +3.1 when white takes Qxe7. Be4 is a miss and shouldn’t be on a “master” move video. Its…

I showed it very briefly in the video but white’s bishop was on e4 at the start. Bxe4 was indeed capturing a bishop, not just moving to an empty square. So the “free queen” you’re talking about wasn’t free.

Thanks for the course Nelson – I’m learning lots! Regarding the Stonewall (lesson 3.2, at 8:30) – can’t black simply thwart a queen or rook attack on the H file with h6? (for e.g., once they see Qh4) I’m sure there’s a workaround for white, but I don’t see it.
Separately, I’ve never understood the utility of a diagonal battery with bishop in…

George, for the first question, the first thing that comes to mind would be playing g4 and then g5 as white to trade off the h6 pawn and keep the attack going.
Second question – the bishop queen batter with bishop in front is usually easier to do, so you don’t always have time to flip it around. Also, in some cases if black plays g6 to blunt…

What’s the best way to attack when you’re in the basic Stonewall setup, but you’ve also got the Black king stuck in the center? Is it basically to push your center pawns in order to open up a file for your major pieces?
-
Personally, if my king is castled and my rook is on the f file, I’ll try to set up a battery with my queen. It also depends on where some of your opponent’s pieces are because if you hop your knight in the pocket to offer the trade in the center and they don’t take it, that automatically leaves a spot in front of their king that you can try to…

Here’s a daily game where I was able to open the f file and the diagonal for my dark squared bishop and mount a decent attack. He managed to get away castling queen side, but I was still able to get a nice rook for bishop trade out of it. https://www.chess.com/game/daily/708555273

I’d love some thoughts on how much to practice while going thru the course. So far I’ve been playing several 5m or 10m games on Chess.com each day. I’d suppose the “right amount” likely varies from person to person but I’d love any general thoughts you might have on practice, how much time one needs to devote daily/weekly to derive real…

No right or wrong answer but I’d recommend 50/50 as a good guideline. Half the time you work through the course -half the time you play and practice what you’ve been learning.

For me, after I got through the openings chapter, I stated watching one video a day and then playing games after that, while consciously trying to apply the principles explained. For example I used to play London/Pirc’s but just to adjust to the course and learn through I’m playing these new openings (and having fun with Owen’s to be honest).…

Did you try increasing the time duration of your games to give you more time to think?

Can anyone from the United States help me?
Is it bad manners to use your first name in a post? Since I’m German, I’m not familiar with the proper etiquette in your country. So I wanted to ask first before I offend anyone.-
I’m not from the USA but been there, I think is fine to use the first name

Thanks for the quick reply. I’m currently trying out Stockfish to see what happens when Stonewall faces Owens.
-
Yes, it’s totally fine to use first names.

Hi Ronald, first names in this situation are actually more appropriate. I studied German for many years in school and I can assure you that I understand where you are coming from. For Americans the reverse is true. We tend to err toward the informal when speaking with Germans we might not know very well. Hope this helps!! Good luck.

On openings I’ve only looked at the under 800
My question on the Owens is , after
1. e4-b6
2. d4-b7
3. ? why doesn’t white simply play d5 ?
seems like that would block the attack on e4 with a pawn defended by its queen-
You would just attack their pawn in that case with e6 and then Nf6 and they actually have a lot to worry about otherwise their center will collapse. I believe we talked about it in one of the previous group coaching calls, so I’d say go watch those when you have time and it should answer a lot of that question. Hope that helps!

I am now 70 years old and started playing chess in January of 2024. I like it because it challenges my mind and find it extremely frustrating to master. I have watched a ton of YouTube videos & now have an expanding chess library. Having fun! ELO is currently ~500 on Rapid in Chess.com.

Hi Bryan, we’re pretty much in the same boat. It keeps the old brain ticking over,eh?
