  • Hi Nelson, I would like to improve my rapid (10+0) game, and eventually have a go at 5+0 matches. I often find I am spending a lot more time then my opponent. However, I am a 550elo rated player, so as much as I would like to be thinking as clearly and critically as you do during rapid games, considering multiple lines several levels deep, I…

Just to illustrate the point I have added a game here that I played yesterday… https://www.chess.com/game/live/120359074404

I played ok, I think. Although I am lucky that my opponent blundered their rook and rage quit! You can see I am well down on time.

      Couple of moments in the game I would appreciate peoples view on;

      11 …Bc5 –> I played…

    • I am looking for friendly advice. Things are getting pretty frustrating for this 1200 player on Chess.com due to much more suspected cheating than I anticipated. E.g., my opponent used Stockfishe’s #1 choice move THREE times in the same game. Maybe for a GM that wouldn’t be suspicious, but for a 1200 player like me, that should be…

      • Best way to avoid cheaters is to check their profile before you make your first move. Abort any games with brand new accounts. The newer the account, the greater the likelihood you’ll find a cheater since they have to create new accounts every time they get banned.

        • I am playing someone who seems to be similar. They are not platinum on chess.com but I am. We are 15 moves in and the play is still following an Explorer thread, which, to me, seems very unusual. It is always the top move, too. I wouldn’t have thought about it, except that I saw this post. (He joined in Feb) Many of mine are, as well, but I do…

        • Thanks, Keith. That’s what I was thinking.

          • Doesn’t matter as much to me since I’m bouncing between 600-700, but I am pretty frequently running into players that are running 90%+ accuracy in our games. That is pretty suspicious for a 600 rated player, so I’ve been wondering the same.

            • Playing the top move 3 times in a game at 1200 actually sounds low to me. I’m rated ~1100 and did a quick check of the game I played last night. The game went 25 moves, I played the top engine move 12 times and my opponent played it 8 times. Now, a lot of these were simple recaptures where the best move was clear. But still, we both… Read more

            • What does a good thought process look like at every move? Like threath analysis, candidate move selection, calculate, blunder check etc..

              • A good thought processes is covered in Module 6 – Blunderchecks. That’s the basic process that covers most of what you should be thinking on each move. I’ve been playing for a couple years know and still have not been able to discipline my mind to follow that process consistently. Usually I follow it for the first 6 to 10 moves and then I…

                  1. Assess the position/threats made

                  2. Identify and triage options

                  3. Decide on a move (the one with most or best benefits)

                  4. Check for tactics/blunders – then move

I was really hopeful that you can teach on how to best utlize the platnium Membership benfits on Chess.com.

                • As I am following the lessons (currently looking at middle game tactics), I have been able solve almost all of the puzzles. But that’s because I know what to look for in a given lesson. When I’m in a game, I am finding it much more difficult to look for all of the middle game tactics, especially in timed games. As a result I’ve blundered more…

                      • I feel your pain Fred. My ELO is plummeting right now. My puzzle rating is high, but my game rating is awful.

                        • Why do we love such a cruel game? Lol

                        • I just want to share. I am halfway through the course. Just finished the tactics module today. And I really try to focus when playing my games. And today I think I played one of the best games I have ever played.

Look at the rating 🙂 Actually I have been stuck around 1200 for a year. Since starting the course I have improved a bit and am now…

                          • Hi all,

I noticed a few months ago that Nelson was giving some masterclasses on his Youtube channel about the book ‘Logical chess, move by move’ by Irving Chernev.

Which other books are also a MUST read?

                            • I’ve heard that “1001 brilliant ways to checkmate” is another one of the masterpieces that you need to have on your shelf. Personally, I need to up my endgames so I’ll be grabbing that one myself.

                              • Chernev’s follow-on book, “The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played’ is also very good. For the middlegame, Michael Stean’s “Simple Chess” is a classic and very easy to understand.
