Ok, this is too funny. As I mentioned in my question earlier I had to take a bit of a hiatus due to real life. When I came back my ELO had a jump with no games even shown from 405 to 422 on a loss with no in between games at all. So probably around a 25 point for not playing. Seems to be points refunds. Never thought a low level…

Ok, I took several weeks off due to other life issues. I did continue to watch chess videos by Nelson and others but I wasn’t really up for the intensity of real games. His current ratings climb is a fantastic companion to this course but that’s not my question….

I started by playing course material against chess dot com bots to get…

  • +I could use your help. Even tho I totally suck at chess I’ve lost a number of games today by my pieces moving involuntarily . It seems that sometimes with my finger near the piece it moves ? I’m using a laptop and not sure what I’m doing wrong. I thought I had to tap on the piece then tap on the square I want it to move to. Without me tapping…

    • If your touchpad is registering your tap as a click and hold or picking up unintentional clicks (because it’s too sensitive, or getting sticky if the laptop is old), I can see this happening. With a mouse, you can click-hold-drop pieces. So maybe turn off the tap to click setting and use the buttons instead?

      • Will try, thanks. I Don’t need help losing, I’ve mastered that skill !

I don’t play on my phone as it’s doom. Probably similar issue here. Cats attacking the computer mouse with my hand on it is still a hazard but a lesser one.

You force chess dot com to only register drag moves but not sure if that’s on all platforms. It’s an option that must be set and I absolutely set it after some accidents.

          • Cat ? What is its ELO ? That might actually improve my games.

            • Ah, so that’s where the expression “cat and mouse” comes from!!

            • Fighting discouragement. Definitely learning a few things along the way but somethings going over my head. Have to constantly fight to remember that the more experience I get the light will get brighter. On some lessons the give an explanation then practice with a quiz works for me, however on some I guess I don’t understand thoroughly the…

            • Welcome everybody
I’m slowly becoming friends with the Stonewall for white. Since I only play KID/Pirc for black, it was interesting to play against a KID player. It wasn’t that easy, but since I know KID’s ideas well, I came out on top.

            • Anyone find they have a screen size preference? I seem to win more often on my phone than my laptop 😂

Maybe because its easier to see the entire board?

              • I never play on my phone versus real opponents (only bots) because I can’t draw arrows on the screen and that seems to help me with tough positions

              • I’m rated around 800, and playing opponents in the 650-850 range. They aren’t blundering. My last 4 or 5 games my opponents have had 80% accuracy, many best moves found, and zero blunders. The engine is rating their performances in the 1200-1500 range. Then I’ll get low on time (I haven’t gotten quick at blunder checking yet), move too quickly…

                • OMG! I just got on to make a similar comment. I was slowly climbing, climbing, climbing, and now I feel like I’m losing eight out of ten games the past week to players that aren’t making any mistakes. I was wondering if playing on weekends is harder than through the week for some reason? Do more good players hop on for the weekend (or is…

                  • It’s weird. Until recently I played purely to pass the time when Netflix is rubbish, but I’ve decided I want to get better. In the “Netflix distraction” games I would do game reviews and realise my opponent had hung pieces or given me a fork or I’d missed a checkmate. Now I’m trying to improve it’s like these same players have suddenly…

                    • Latest game. Another “700” who just got 93% accuracy and no blunders!! What is going on?

                      • New game. Opponent 722. 89.2% accuracy. 0 blunders. How is it possible to improve against these opponents?

                        • I feel your frustration. It does seem like sometimes you run into a string of better players. That said, usually the mistakes are there, but maybe they’re not as obvious as hang-a-piece-in-one-move. Could you post one of these games?

                      • So far so good. Applying the lessons so far and I am winning some games with Bots and an occasional live opponent around the 850 t0 1000 elo range. currently I’m around 530 . Question , when using Chess.com self-analysis.

After making a move and I check to see what the best move is according to the computer , if I follow it up with the…

                        • Yes, I believe in the analysis it shows the best moves for both sides. However, from the analysis tab you can click a barely noticeable “Analysis…” drop down menu to see the top three recommended moves and you can adjust the engine with the little gear icon on the right hand side. How useful the analysis is will depend on your rating and…

                          • You mirror what i was thinking. I personally can’t see ahead 15 moves let alone 22…..or 4 or 3. Nelson points out that games are won because of mistakes, so , maybe the analysis is beneficial in showing what the best move would be for both sides and then realizing that the best move for our opponent will probably not happen ?

                            Anyway, lots…
