  • As a tip for Lichess players who may be wondering whether they lost to a cheater. Look closely at your opponents’ ratings right at the start of the game. I’m a beginner in the upper range (1410).
After having been assigned several chess opponents who were significantly stronger in rating than me, I’m slowly losing interest in this game on…

    • I use Lichess to test things out against non-bots because I don’t care about that rating. I also use it to build personal studies on openings.

Chess.com would have the same issue regarding ranking though. I have a friend around 1600-1700 on Chess.com that doesn’t play Rapid so his ranking is 800 on that. If one day he decided to play Rapid…

  • I just watched the lesson ‘pawns are the soul of chess’. That was really an eye opener, I did a few puzzles after, and won 3 games in row while trying to think about both my and my opponents pawns, it helped so much!

Hello James, where can I watch that lesson? Is it the Breaking 1500?

  • Progress report.

In rapid i’m only around 530, mostly due to blunders and the occasional mouse slip ( don’t need help with making bad moves mister computer , I’ve mastered them ). So working on blunder control.

However, there is a positive. Taking my time I am ( sometimes ) able to beat 700 and the occasional 1000 elo bots without…

    • I wouldn’t feel too bad about not seeing a mate in that situation – that’s pretty hard tactic to find in-game for sure. But it was a great find to see that while analyzing afterward – I know that’s where a lot of my learning has come from, too.

      Keep up the good work!

Haven’t had the time to play much recently but still taking a few minutes each day to do puzzles. Highly recommend adding ‘poop time puzzles’ to your training regiment for anyone out there who can’t always commit the time they’d like to! XP

    • ok, I actually think I need help so I was following the course and my rating was increased by 200 elo and then in the last 3 days I lost all 200 elo and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong I do tactics training every day and if I get a puzzle wrong I save it in a spreadsheet and try it the next day and the next until I get it right. my…

      • I looked through a few of your games. The games that I looked at ended with a blunder. It looks like you generally play pretty fast, so maybe just taking a little extra time to do the blunder check would help?

I’m at a loss for words and completely confused. After a 3-month steady climb from 1100 to 1420, i just experienced a 2-day free fall of 188 points to collapse back to 1232. I’m actually fairly crushed over it, as it validated my imposter syndrome related to any improvement I’ve made. Has anyone experienced similar?

I feel like months of work and…

          • That happens to everyone, don’t feel bad. I am going through the same ups and downs right now too. I went from 800 blitz to 1060 and now back down to 900. When this happens I take a break from playing and do more studying until some gears move and things start to click again.

Go through your losses and see what you did wrong. For me when someone…

          • Don’t play if you’re still on tilt. You may not even know that you are; I haven’t achieved 1300+ ELO yet; however, I was close and then dropped like a stone. I have since built back up to 1250ish and I am feeling good about my games again. I had to step back, self assess, and analyze why I was losing. It really boiled down to just not playing… Read more

            • Though the collapse has been insane (1420 to 1203 so far) it’s occurred in blocks of games between 4-10. I’ve been taking breaks and trying to steer clear of tilt. It’s just a mental block all of a sudden like things that were so CLEAR are now just strangely unfamiliar

              • What is the Elo ratings of your opponents? I just watched one of Nelson’s streams where he lost a bunch of games in a row. However, the opponents were all similar in Elo rating so he only lost a few points per game. Maybe adjust the level range for opponents?

              • I’m having a good game. I’m ahead in pieces. I can see what I want to do, and then…
I forget to do a blunder check, and lose my advantage or even the game.

Arrgh. I can’t seem to break my bad habits.

This course has been very insightful, and useful. But I guess I’m a poor student. I can’t seem to put what I’ve learned into practise.

                Perhaps if…

                • Has definitely happened to me plenty of times too! The blunder check has helped me a lot. When I’m ahead I try to focus extra-hard now. It’s so easy to get overconfident and careless and throw away your advantage.

                  • Blundering has had me kicking myself so many times now I think my legs have become double jointed 😉

But seriously thanks for your reply. It’s good to know that I’m not alone with my struggles.

                    • Same. I KNOW I should do a blunder check…but I get tunnel vision, get excited on an attack, and forget.

                      • That’s exactly it! Tunnel vision! Great description! I need to find a way to make it a habit to maintain a wide view of the entire board.

                        Oh well. Practice, practice, practice.

                        • This happens to me A LOT. I can’t count how many times I have a crushing position or attack and end up blundering my queen to a knight because I don’t blunder check.
