I have grown a lot since starting this course. On Chess.com I am doing well against bots and puzzles but in live games, I seem to be stuck with people playing well above my level although I am not even at 30% of the level I play against bots. Are many good players playing low or am I missing something?

You can adjust the setting in chess.com so that you will be assigned people of ANY level below you and LIMIT it to people no more than 25 points above you. thats what ive done and it gives a good mix of people you are better than , equal to and only slightly better than you. So adjust the settings

The bots are far weaker than their rating.. I’m 1100ish and beat 1600 bots no problem. 1800+ is where they’re more challenging for me (losing more than winning).

Gotta say, this course is reinforcing my reasons for quitting years ago.
Module 4 kicked my butt and the quizzes, made me feel like I needed to be 1500 to solve them. I,m playing like total fertilizer and loosing on a record level.

two questions I would like to have addresses tonight. 1. If playing someone who makes random moves during the opening, should I still play the Stonewall or Owens, or, just go for center development, two pawns in the center, two knights and bishops out and a castle?

can you demonstrate how to see beyond just the 1st best move to see…

Similar question. I’ve seen lots of moves that diverge from the ones they’re “likely” to do that were covered in the preferred openings. My question is not whether the openings are still good (I’m sure they are), but when to diverge versus doing what I often see in Nelson’s rating climb videos, just going for pawns in the center and…

I have the same question about recognizing when to “abandon” the standard opening moves when you notice the opponent make an unusual response in the early stages. As one type of example: they bring the queen out early so you would be inclined to chase it.

Here are two versions of defense against stonewall. Brown is dr wolf app and gray is “play magnus” app age 30.
Its easy to quickly take back and try different lines. Magnus app is very strong. I tested it against the chess.com capablanca bot and magnus app won in 30 moves with a 97.8 accuracy. The magnus at 12 years old beats the dr wolf on…

Hi, Nelson. I just bought the Breaking 1500 course, and I’m zipping through the lessons. Good stuff so far! One of the promises in the promo materials was that I would be invited to three live conversations. I’m looking forward to the one later today! But the schedule doesn’t show any additional live sessions after today. I assume that you’ll…

I’ve been playing the Stonewall and Jobava London a lot as white but have been seeing more and more of the Englund gambit (D4, E5). I know the gambit is a bit unsound with DxE5 behind the best response but what are some typical follow-ups after that move as i have seen black continue to attack the pawn in a variety of ways after DxE5.

During the Tactics Module we’re told to constantly be scanning for tactics and then in the Avoiding Blunders Module we’re told to spend time doing a blunder check before each move. Obviously if we spent equal time doing both we could run into time trouble. Is there a rule of thumb were one takes precedence over the other?
-
Personally, I focus on blunder checks because it’s the larger weakness for me. I tend to find tactics pretty easily. I too often see tactics and go gung ho for them without realizing I’m actually blundering. So, I’d say it depends on which is the greater weakness for you.

You might like longer time controls until you get faster at thinking. I just play 10 minutes because its fun but make more mistakes 👍🏼

Thanks for the input guys. I’ve only ever played against the bots online and OTB games at the local library so I haven’t had to deal with time pressure yet, but I’m sure I will be soon. Looking forward to tonight’s live coaching session.

I was losing a lot of 10 minutes games so I went back to 15/10. now im getting good at those. Im just gonna stay at 15/10 until I feel I need a challenge
-
I would humbly suggest that blunder-check is more important, and must be done on *every* move. If I miss a blunder, I might very well lose the game on the spot. On the other hand, if I miss a tactic (i.e., a tactic that I have in the position, not one that my opponent has), I may not win the game (or material) on this move, but I’ll probably… Read more
