  • I have another question if I may: My ELO is 500-600 on Rapid (15:10 games) vs my ELO on daily games of 800-900. I noticed some of the others I have played in my range are also doing the same thing – +300.

Playing Daily games on chess.com is like doing a chess puzzle for me and after a few minutes I can figure it out.

    I have only been playing…

    • I have a 600 rating difference between Rapid (766) and Daily (1344). Daily games give you much more time to consider moves and the analysis tool which is indispensable for blunder checks so I play much better on daily. I think all the streamers playing 10 minutes games gives us mere mortals false expectations.

If you are winning 15 minutes…

      • Daily (or correspondence) games are just different than playing Rapid (or OTB in person). You will typically see that daily games will be a higher rating simply because you have more time to make your moves (less likely to blunder pieces and you have plenty of time to calculate multiple lines and choose the best one). In Rapid games,…

      • OK, I just got a message from chess.com that I lost to a cheater. “We have detected that one or more of your recent opponents has violated our Fair Play Policy. As compensation for potentially unfair rating losses, we adjusted your following ratings:

        Rapid: 563 + 7 => 570″

How do I know who the cheater was?

On some of my daily games I noticed…

        • If you view your game history you will see the cheater has been banned and there is 🚫 beside their name.

One of the things I’ve seen Nelson, GothamChess, Hikaru, and others look for is the length of time it takes for each move, but that will be useless for a daily game. Other clues are new accounts with high ratings and long winning…

          • I’ve only reported someone once, and their play was really fast. Their record showed a massive improvement in rating over a very short time and won the last 10 games in a row. I didn’t accuse of cheating just rating manipulation. I don’t mind losing but it felt like it merited a second look.

I didn’t know you could check on them for a red…

After a year of the Caro-Kann I’m growing up to the big boys and bought my first Sicilian Opening book (and Dutch for anything other than e4). Wish me luck!

          • I’m having trouble progressing from 900 -> 1000. I find two different things happening 60%-70% of the time.

            1) My opponents play fast and thwart my threats and I get flagged.

            2) My opponents play fast and I find a tactic and they have 20 minutes on the clock to my 5.

Bottom line, I need to play more quickly while still being accurate. This…

            • Congrats on grinding to 900 and playing longer time control games online. For time management I would recommend one or two things. 1) Try to play into openings that you know. If you know the first 8-15 moves of your opening you should have plenty of time in the middlegame. 2) Create an internal process for each turn (Nelson talks about it in…

              • One thing I do as a drill is to play bots with a 10 minute or 15/10 time control. The bots always finish with like 9:30 on their clock, but It helps me work on time management.

                • I try to move a little faster In very familiar territory. Then when I am In the weeds I use that time to think it through. Losing to the clock is a Bummer =)

                • What do you guys recommend that i watch? What im wondering is What part of the course would you say really bumped up your game?

                  • While I recommend viewing everything in the course, to start improving more quickly identify the items that you feel are weakest. Avoiding blunders (6) is great for everyone. If you don’t have a set of openings you feel confident with, opening fundamentals (2) followed by perfect openings (3) would be a great place to start.

                    Regardless, module…

                    • I would say it depends on where you are at now. If you are less than 1000 ELO then I would do (1) Setting yourself up for Success (2) Opening Fundamentals (3) Openings for White & Black & then (6) Avoiding Blunders. If you are already 1000 elo, you probably already know items (1) & (2) and there are better openings for beginners than the…

                      • I liked the additional considerations of the two openings. Also the blunder check lesson.

                        • I second everything thing John, Nate, and (the other) Keith said. The module on blunders is one of the most important in my opinion. There is some very important material in Module 4 (Tactics), but it is a looong slog… I still have two lessons to go in the module and I want to rewatch a bunch of them.

                        • 2 against 1

No wonder i have a hard time playing.

I had an absolute win against a 1000 rated bot……….and I stalemate. Stupid stupid stupid. You’d think I’m on the oppositions payroll !

                          Oh well.

                          • I just did the same… was absolutely crushing a 1400 bot and then blunder blunder blunder and I struggled to get a stalemate. Some day I hope to get better and analyzing and calculating, but today is not that day.

                          • A month after purchasing the course I reached a ranking of 1500. I am very satisfied. Your streams are also very helpful. Thank you and I look forward to the 2000 course.
