This was a crazy game that I ended up winning thankfully, but I had a lingering question: which side should I castle to if at all? If you look at the engine lines usually it is just 2-3 moves away from castling queen side being the best move. It never seems to suggest castling king side and the way the game played out after e5 there wasn’t a good opportunity to castle. In my experience against that Jobava line castling kingside is really risky

Oh yeah it does say queen side! I don’t know how I missed that. It also tells me to just give up a night too haha.

Chris, I personally would have gone queenside because the h5 pawn was so weak. If that pawn was on h6 instead, then since white’s g6 pawn blocks their pieces kingside would probably be okay. Also since you had moved most of your pieces to the queenside, that’s probably going to be a safer place than the kingside.

Does anyone else seem to be matching against a lot of cheaters lately? It feels like every 3-4 games I play against someone with 95+ accuracy.

chess.com has become virtually unplayable. Lichess is a lot better for whatever reason.

I don’t understand chess.com. I had 2 games with 99+ accuracy for whatever reason. I have plenty of losses too. I have been practicing a lot from this course and also watching another chess coach, trying new openings and strategies. I got my account banned today for those 2 games. I’m about done with chess.com…

It starts at the beginning for me. Can you just drag the video progress slider back to the start?
Other than rewatching a different video and navigating back to that page, not sure what else to try.

Hi Dean! Sorry for the delayed response here! The video saves your progress, so each time you go back to it, it will pick up where you left off. As John mentioned, you can toggle the progress slider back to the start of the video. I can reset this lesson for you from the backend so it starts from the beginning. Let me know!

So I played a game against a 1500+ player. I’m just hitting 1100 myself, but I feel like I had no way of winning this game. What could I have done differently?

To get above 1500 you have to really make sure you’re paying attention to long term positional weaknesses. So on move 9 when they played Bd3 you really needed to take it, because by letting them take on g6 later it ruined your pawn structure and created very big weaknesses around your king. I’m noticing that with white and the stonewall, they are putting their knight on e4 backed up with a pawn. Is this something to be concerned with? Also, I have been playing people that never castle! Out of 6 games, I only had 1 that actually castled. It seems like no one is castling anymore. I’m sure it’s just at my low level, but it’s…

Sometimes you can put your knight on d2 and trade it off. Often if they don’t capture your knight or retreat you may be able to win a pawn by capturing their knight.

I tried the stonewall against a bot and it just gets me into a mess. The bots don’t play the norm I guess. Very frustrating. The bot is Hans at 1000 supposedly.

The bot always pushes the pawn from c5 to c4 attacking my white bishop. This bot also doesn’t castle. I’ll keep watching and learning, but this opening seems to get my pieces stuck. I hate playing bots but isn’t that a good way to practice?

I like to practice new openings against bots as typically they will play something (not necessarily good) that will cause me to to have to figure out the position as opposed to just playing memorized moves. Different “1000” bots will respond to the same opening differently.

I used to win a little and got up to 405. I’m a beginner, but was at least advancing. Now I just get my butt kicked all over the place. I hate it. Finally broke 1500! Joined this course last year and wanted to say thanks to Nelson for putting this together and for the community of people in this blog. My recipe was doing puzzles daily – got my peak rating up to 2500, and forcing myself to stop studying and play more.

I started at 100 elo. I played 31 games in a row. I won 27 of them. I went straight to 600 In one sitting…. I think I can go father If I got this far with only 4 losses. WE will see….. wish me luck… gang.
