I think I suck at chess. I finally made it above 400 and then I’m back to 300’s. I can’t seem to get it. I do an opening and do well and then it falls apart. Very discouraged tonight. 🙁

I think I just need to play bots and then it won’t affect my rating. They just play so weird….

I’m not that much further on than you Cathleen, but keep on going. Although we make mistakes and end up losing, we are still learning….
-
Hi Cathleen, thank you for your message! I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling frustrated with your playing right now.
What you’re experiencing is completely normal. Every chess player, from absolute beginners to grandmasters, go through stretches where it feels like nothing is clicking. This is part of the learning curve. Blunders,…

Thanks for the encouragement you guys. I did finally win a few games in a row putting me at 377. I really need to slow down but I get worried I’m going to lose on time. I see others play (in videos) and they take a lot of time sometimes in the beginning and then play pretty quickly in the end game. Anyway, I will keep trying. This game is…

I might have to give that a try. Do you have as many random players that play that? I might be easier for me too. I’m at 423 and now I’m paranoid to play!! Thanks, Tom!

My 1st go at the Owens Defence as black and I play an INCREDIBLY aggressive player graded at 822! Unbelievable sustained attacking, but I managed the win. I notice people like to ‘abandon’ the game rather than resign – how do you abandon a game?
-
Hi Tom, thanks for sharing this!
When people “abandon” a game, they’re usually just closing the app or browser mid-game instead of formally resigning. The platform then waits a bit before automatically declaring a win on time or abandonment. It’s not the most sportsmanlike way to finish a game, but it happens.
You’re doing great, keep…

Been at 1300-1400 for years. Ground my way from 450 to that back in covid era. Been coasting for a few years. Hoping this course will legitimately help put that extra couple hundred ELO on permanently.
Best of luck Legends.

I got this course immediately when it came out last year and fell in love with the stonewall. I got up to 1200 from around 1050 rapid and then hit a wall where I wasn’t improving, it almost felt like I was going backwards making very obvious blunders and mistakes. I think I was more focused on being robotic with my moves instead of playing…

Good luck, Drew!

Thanks so much for sharing your story! We’re happy to hear that the Stonewall sparked something for you early on! That jump from 1050 to 1200 is no small feat, and it speaks to the effort and consistency you put in.
Hitting a plateau is something most players face, especially around the 1100–1300 range. It’s easy to get caught in… Read more

TL;DR How to focus on taking the course, rather than blitz (haha) through it all in a night, for proper retention?
I got the Breaking 1500 course last year, and it’s been nearly a year since I last used it. Been playing OTB and mostly against the same guy. But when someone new asked to play last week, and provided a proper challenge,…

I have the same fear in losing ELO. I got to 1200 rapid, lost some games, then got back to 1200, and quit playing for a while because I didn’t want to go below 1200 again 🤣
-
Aaron it’s about finding a good ratio of studying to playing. If you do too much of one and not enough of the other that’s where you have problems. I think personally I’d start with 50/50 and then see if you feel like you need more studying or more practicing what you already learned. Maybe that looks like one day you just go through the…
