I dont think ive ever been more frustrated with the game of chess. At one point today my bullet rating was down to 901 from a high of 1184 two weeks ago. And I’ve played 2,586 games of bullet this year (plus another 1,956 in other time formats) so its not like it was a new rating still normalizing.
The more i learn, the worse i play. I’ve…

I can relate. Last week, I was 820, but now down to 780. It always frustrating to watch our rating decreases because it feels like all the time we’ve spent playing chess was for nothing. We just have to remember that losing countless games is part of the process. We need to persevere to accomplish our goals.

Did regain back up to 1001 (a 100 point jump) today before the Olympic basketball started

Happens to the best of us. Compared to last year, my bullet is down over 500 elo and blitz down over 300. When I got back into chess (after playing against the computer as a child) I was around 1040 blitz and had never studied chess. I’ve been trying to improve for over 4 years and have been playing & analysing heaps, had over 70 one hour…

It will likely take a lot to see improvement in bullet or blitz play to be honest. While you may be learning new things those time formats benefit from things that are in your muscle memory rather than knowledge base. If you half apply knowledge not yet in your muscle memory… well things won’t go well as a worse but consistent plan is better…

Went full tilt over the last week. Dropped from 1184 in bullet to 933…251 points. And ive played 2,787 bullet games total, so its not like my rating was inflated. Just a terrible week. Its like EVERY opponent knows exactly what is coming from my openings and im behind the 8-ball all game.

Then while I’m at my most frustrated and playing terribly, my higher-rated friend texts me and wants to play 3 in blitz (where I’m rated 1207) and he’s rated 1546.
I win all 3 games, playing great chess.
Chess is maddening 😂

Went full tilt today. Was like a gambler that just needed one hand to get right. Lost 100 points in last 24 hours and lost a week of climbing up in bullet.
Dropped from 1184 to 1089

It’s now a multi-day tilt. Woke up, immediately lost 5 out of 6.
I’m now down 140 points since Friday. It’s like I legitimately forgot how to play

Wasn’t even like it was long stretches either. I’d give myself 5-6 games, do poorly, then would review them. I’d go study up on things I missed, come back a couple hours later, then drop a bunch more.
This continued like that all weekend. Watched videos on how to attack fianchettoed bishops and King’s Indian…come back…and get destroyed some more.

Maybe time to let your brain ” reset ” ! I sometimes need to do that especially with the puzzles 😵💫

If I play too long I start losing a lot. Also I’ve found it better to use longer time controls as you can’t apply new knowledge at full speed. I’m not even bothering with games under 10 minutes and I’ve been doing initial exploration on 30 minute games so I have time to actually think things through. The old crawl-walk-run theory of learning.

So…I did the Excel file tracking/analysis on losses.
I’m assessing all my losses for trends right now and just noticed I’m 18-2-1 in my last 21 blitz games as white. (.5 blunders per game; almost none impactful)
I’m 9-11-1 in my last 21 as black, with blunders causing most (69%) of the losses (about 2 blunders/game and some very bad…

Just fought a 2100-rated bot to a 27 move draw using the Stonewall. Had a +0.6 advantage but it was a super complicated position and i just couldnt see the way forward. Took the moral victory.
I doubled up his pawns. I got a knight on an outpost.
Then i chickened out because i wanted at least a draw and couldnt find the win.

Well done , those bots aren’t easy !!!

This is my 1-month bullet graph. The second half of this graph is the time I’ve been in this course. Definitely seeing things faster and with a better plan

Nice to see that!

Struggled to make Owen’s work for me, but have settled on Stonewall as white (LOVE this) and then also using Stonewall vs 1. d4 as black, and Scandinavian vs 1. e4. I think it perhaps suits my preferences better
Using the course concepts, I’m attacking better, seeing tactics, and blundering less.
My bullet rating has climbed to 1088 (+117…
