Hi Nelson , wonder if you could analyse this game please . It was a totally out of the blue challenge from a 1711 rapid rated player yesterday ( 3.9.24 ) which I accepted ( also played another as black ). In this one I fell into a queen trap ( after looking at it but only seeing it immediately I’d taken a pawn ) . Got the material back but… Read more

As a total aside , can anyone think of another game ( apart from chess ) where the game’s ultimate goal is never arrived at ? In chess the aim is to capture your opponent’s king ( checkmate being forced capture next move ) . The king though is never physically captured !! I can’t 😵💫

Well technically the goal is to corner the king, take away all the squares with an attack. You only capture other pieces.

It is simply assumed the king will be captured in a checkmate. I’m used to the tradition that the loser tips the king over to signify it’s “death” though now with online we just get the hash mark. But there’s no reason to say the king is not captured, we just save some time.

Just had novel experience – accepted a challenge from an anonymous guest player on Chess.com 14day / move would be white ( unrated ) & when I went to play my first move , found I don’t have a queen !!! This guest rates themselves as 400 , so….. 🤔

So the game had a handicap? Did you continue the game or abandon it?

Anyone know how the review bot’s accuracy rating was 75% after this game ? Does the brevity have something to do with it ? Just intrigued !!

Just watched a video from Chess Vibes that popped up on my You Tube feed – a gent called Harry beating a 1550 bot ( 3 times his rating ) , by accident ! It’s from a year ago ( Harry was 76 ) & it made my heart glad !!!

Not really connected with the course , but does anyone understand this ” thing ” about people offering a draw when you have an unstoppable mate next move – I don’t 😵💫
-
I think it’s just people trying to be funny. In OTB tournaments or at higher levels I believe it’s considered disrespectful. At our level I don’t actually mind, as you can just ignore this.
I’m more frustrated with people who prefer to stall games instead of resigning in losing positions. Happens a lot.

IMO they figure they are lost anyway so if it’s a 1% chance that you will just click the check-mark without thinking then it’s worth a shot.
