  • Question on the Owens……..

I’m new to analyzing games and would appreciate your input on my conclusion.

Following the mainline (as per the moves provided by Nelson), am I correct in saying that when I get to the end (move 13), the only advantage black has, is that white has 2 sets of doubled pawns?

    • Joseph I was looking for this and didnt see it. Was this in an actual game?

      • If you go to lessons 3;2 and 3;3 the opening lessons, and click on the word materials which is above the lesson panel , you can download the opening lines for the stonewall and owens. It covers multiple variations

        • Here is what you are looking for

        • Think I am missing a decimal point. 1500? At the rate I’m going I’ll be glad If I can maintain 150!

I’m learning but unfortunately, I’m playing worse than ever. Losing games to players that are lower rated than me all the time.

I’m rated around 500 and dropping fast. Think I’ve dropped to 450 now. It seems like everyone in my rating…

          • I understand where you are coming from, When I was at 500 I felt the players were way to good. I think a lot of these players are actually higher rated they just created a new account. Now that I made it to 1000 I feel players are good but not as good as some of the 500’s I played.

Stick with it you will improve. Make sure you are analyzing…

            • Thank you, Robert, for the encouragement . I hope my post didn’t come across as a complaint against the course . I was expressing frustration with my cobwebbed coleslaw cluttered brain.

I know that as I stick to the program I will improve. I’m only halfway thru and I’m starting to see patterns and looking for ideas I wouldn’t have…

            • I’d be curious to know what time controls you’re playing also? For example, I’m rated 1200 Rapid, but only about 500 Blitz. And the Blitz rating is fairly real, I just haven’t gotten the hang of playing fast. I lose on time a lot in Blitz, and/or play bad moves under time pressure.

              • Hi. Keith. I’m playing 15/10. I don’t think I’m under time issues, I think I just get a little hyped up with a live person and don’t open my eyes. When I play bots I tend to win most of the time in the range of 550-700. I tend to get nervous with live chess. I think I need to play a lot more games to get over that. Thanks for your input.

            • Eureka!

Finally. I’m slowly getting better. Won a gew games. Started at 489 today am now at 566.

But, the fun I had today was with a bot of the same rating. A clean game where I felt pretty much in control. Checkmate came in 24 moves with the best part being a Smothered mate !

I’m enjoying this today as I’m sure I’ll be down in the 300s tomorrow.

              Cheers

              • I hunted for a smothered mate forever and I’m in the 1300s now (1320). I was at 1420 a couple weeks ago, but hit a dip.

Anyway, congrats on ever considering that mating pattern and seeing it at your rating. That’s awesome!

                • Thanks. 1320-1420 pretty good. Sneaking up on that 1500 !

                • Progress report.

In rapid i’m only around 530, mostly due to blunders and the occasional mouse slip ( don’t need help with making bad moves mister computer , I’ve mastered them ). So working on blunder control.

However, there is a positive. Taking my time I am ( sometimes ) able to beat 700 and the occasional 1000 elo bots without…

                  • I wouldn’t feel too bad about not seeing a mate in that situation – that’s pretty hard tactic to find in-game for sure. But it was a great find to see that while analyzing afterward – I know that’s where a lot of my learning has come from, too.

                    Keep up the good work!

                  • +I could use your help. Even tho I totally suck at chess I’ve lost a number of games today by my pieces moving involuntarily . It seems that sometimes with my finger near the piece it moves ? I’m using a laptop and not sure what I’m doing wrong. I thought I had to tap on the piece then tap on the square I want it to move to. Without me tapping…

                    • If your touchpad is registering your tap as a click and hold or picking up unintentional clicks (because it’s too sensitive, or getting sticky if the laptop is old), I can see this happening. With a mouse, you can click-hold-drop pieces. So maybe turn off the tap to click setting and use the buttons instead?

                      • Will try, thanks. I Don’t need help losing, I’ve mastered that skill !

                        • CJ

I don’t play on my phone as it’s doom. Probably similar issue here. Cats attacking the computer mouse with my hand on it is still a hazard but a lesser one.

You force chess dot com to only register drag moves but not sure if that’s on all platforms. It’s an option that must be set and I absolutely set it after some accidents.

                          • Cat ? What is its ELO ? That might actually improve my games.

                            • Ah, so that’s where the expression “cat and mouse” comes from!!

                            • Fighting discouragement. Definitely learning a few things along the way but somethings going over my head. Have to constantly fight to remember that the more experience I get the light will get brighter. On some lessons the give an explanation then practice with a quiz works for me, however on some I guess I don’t understand thoroughly the…

After making a move and I check to see what the best move is according to the computer , if I follow it up with the…

However, from the analysis tab you can click a barely noticeable “Analysis…” drop down menu to see the top three recommended moves and you can adjust the engine with the little gear icon on the right hand side. How useful the analysis is will depend on your rating and…

                                • You mirror what i was thinking. I personally can’t see ahead 15 moves let alone 22…..or 4 or 3. Nelson points out that games are won because of mistakes, so , maybe the analysis is beneficial in showing what the best move would be for both sides and then realizing that the best move for our opponent will probably not happen ?

                                  Anyway, lots…

On chess.com is there a way that I can set up a chess board and to move both black and white to try different moves ?

                                • Question with the Owens defense. After Bishop goes to B4, isn’t the most likely counter move Pawn to A3 driving the Bishop away ? What would be the best move for black ? Trade with the Knight or retreat ?
