I cannot win and it is so frustrating!

I am so SICK and TIRED of losing games like this. 60% of my games I lose I had a material advantage, and STILL LOST!!! I have been in a slump since November, please, for the love of everything holy, someone tell me what I am doing wrong. Chess is making me so angry that I am growing to hate it.

No progress in over a year of actively trying. Courses, puzzles, and other training materials, do not help. There is something fundamentally wrong in my thinking and I am too dumb to figure it out. Does anyone have any suggestions?!

I have about the same rating, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

You played a solid game but lost on time on move 73. So I don’t think time management was a serious problem. My three comments are:

          1) You should have captured the pawn d5 when white’s king moved away. That would have permitted you to use your king to support your own pawns.

          2) You had a pair of connected passed pawns on both sides of the board. I think you should have pushed them sooner. Also you should have kept them together on one side (with your king’s support (comment 1), then used the pawns on the other side together as a distraction. I think this would allowed you get a queen and still have time to win the game.

          3) When white’s king ran to track down your h pawn, either use your rook to block the king from getting adjacent to the pawn or go around and capture the bishop blocking your a pawn. Force the bishop to choose which pawn to stop then promote the other.

Note both of you played solid games, you had a nice find with the skewer tactic and used that to build up the material lead.

Best of luck with your next game.

@John thank you for your suggestion. When looking at the analysis there was one point where I was trying to pin the bishop to the king with a rook and stockfish suggested bringing the second rook up. If I am understanding it correctly, the idea was to basically liquidate everything and then try to play the pawns on each of the board against the lone King. If I would have saw that I would have went for it. BUT, I did not see it. I am always under time pressure and need to learn how to think faster.

@louvoodooyahoo-com there’s nothing wrong with simplifying and going to an end game! Remember rapid chess is not like regular chess! Most people don’t have the mental toughness to calculate and stare for a 4 hour game.

I get into a winning position many times with the stonewall and when I lose its because I miss one important move or just brain fart and blunder. Then I go on to lose a few more games and forget everything I just reviewed. You must ask yourself the exact same questions on every single move prior to moving (when in a complex situation). I didn’t ask myself what happens if I sac a piece. I missed a back rank mate: a simple pattern that 6 year old kids master. I’ve broke 1000 several times and find myself thinking about quitting, but then realize NOBODY likes a quitter.

Keep studying-review breaking 1500 modules often. You can get better. You don’t have decades like children have. Once (if) I hit 1500 I am not sure what I will do, but being a good sport and not taking this too seriously until then is not a bad idea for me. Being happy with yourself is a very personal decision. Believe your fellow students care about you and want you to succeed!

@armyguy63bgmail-com I appreciate the encouragement. I am currently taking a few days off to reset. I feel as though I am getting to angry and that is clouding my judgment. I really wish people would just resign when losing. It is super annoying to be “winning” but lose on time, or blunder away a game under time pressure. I am going to work on my time management as well.
