Analysis question
I’ll try again…. Hi everyone, I’m going through the review of this game and am struggling with the analysis of the mid-game….. my move 17 being marked as highly suspect which I understand. Why is my move 19 not being marked up as a blunder? Any assistance would be appreciated.

It looks like by black going Qg6 you set yourself up for a nice pin/fork with Bd3. They are threatening two moves: 1) Ke7 check with a discovered attack with the bishop on your queen and 2) threatening to take your knight on c2 because it’s trapped. You negate all of this by not stepping into that pin/fork by going Qf6.
In general this is where I feel Chess.com game review goes off the rails because it talks about a tactic to win a bishop, but then it never shows you how a bishop is tactically won. I just watched a really good video from GM Noel Studer about how to your analyze your games that might really help you out because it opened my eyes https://youtu.be/shma5hsckww?si=lH9Cpig_4z4HZElQ

@ChrisCannoli Thanks Chris. Very interesting. So putting the three whys into practice:
Why did I make the move of Qg6? a) the Nf5 move from my opponent was threatening to capture it, so I needed to move it b) I liked the idea of staying on the g file as I had a double attack going on the g2 pawn c) I didn’t want to progress to g5 with my queen as I had visions of the c3 knight coming into e4 and my queen being constantly harrassed
Why is my move not ideal? It enables my opponent to put their white bishop on d3 which sets up an immediate attack on my knight (that has nowhere to go) and also it sets up an absolute pin on my queen once my opponent moves his knight to check me
Why is the better move better than my chosen move? The best engine move is Qf6 that prevents the nasty bishop pin, it also prevents my opponents queen from attacking the vulnerable f7 pawn.
I notice though, that after the Qf6 move, the best move for my opponent is Ng3 and then for my Queen to return to g6 and then my opponents Knight to return to f5 and then my Queen returns to f6…. it seems like the engine goes into a bit of a spin.
Anyway, the takeaway for me, as your man Noel suggests I identify, is I guess I need to look for that double attack from the bishop.
Would you agree with that analysis Chris?

@tucker yeah you nailed it! Your knights in a tough spot, but I think walking into a potential discovered attack on your queen would be lights out.

That linked video has some very good ideas on reviewing games. Thanks for the link.
Getting back to Tom’s original question, my guess is that since the engine’s evaluation rating goes from +4.4 after your move 17, to +5.5 after your move 18, then up to +6.25 after your move 19. So the engine had you in a solidly losing position and the best engine alternatives like f5 would have only changed the evaluation to about 5.85, so your alternatives at that point weren’t really that much better. That is my best guess on the original question.
Of course having lost my last 3 games myself, I am probably not the best person to be taking advice from either. Best of luck on your next game!

@n30w23066yahoo-com Hi John, thanks for your assistance. Yes, I think my original question was asking about the coach review that I have tended to use after my games, but now having watched that video Chris suggested, I can see that I’m going to be better off looking for the large swings on the analysis rather than the symbols given on the chess.com review. I do agree with you, those moves on move 18 and 19 are desperately not recognising the threat…. it seems to me like I kind of went into a tunnel, the blinkers came on, and I was sucked in to that exchange completely missing the unveiled threat on my queen. Thank you for your time.

Tough spot no doubt. I’ve found really focusing on calculation and really taking my time has lead to improving my chess the most. At the end of the day what the engine is doing is just calculation, but at a very deep level. So we as humans might as well get as good as possible at it.
