Hello everyone! I’m new here as well as to chess. I’ve been playing chess for only a few months casually against various computer models. I bought the Chessnut electronic board and just recently signed up for this class! Not ranked, but I’m certain I’m below 500. I’m terrible. So I just studied the Stonewall Opening lesson. I then take this to my computer opponent and I’m really struggling. Seems like every time I start the SWO I’m faced with moves I have no idea how to counter. Once I’ve played the f4 pawn, the computer plays h6 for example. Then I find my entire Kingside being attacked. So much to learn, I know. Just frustrating to be getting destroyed using the first opening I’ve learned.

I think chess is not for anyone with low self esteem. Problem need to be a masochist to really enjoy. At least at my level.

Does the electronic board have different difficulty levels it plays at? If it is set to play as stockfish (ELO ~3200), then it will totally destroy you (along with everyone else on this message board) regardless of what opening you play. See if you can turn the engine difficulty down a bit and see if that helps.
You will improve with practice along with the lessons in this course. Best of luck!

John makes a great point about the difficulty level. As far as openings go, depending on what the other side does I flip flop between the Stonewall and London ( another positional opening that kinda fits most play ). Do you have a chess.com account ? You can choose multiple levels of difficulty so you can play at a level that gives you a fighting chance. I’m not sure if the basic membership includes the ability to let you backup and undo a move so you can correct a mistake. Also analytics to see what you could have done.
Anyway , enjoy the brain exercise.
Before chess I wasn’t too sharp.
Now I’m sharp as a marble !

I am no expert . I think as far as chess goes Its great to have an Idea BUT I also think we need to adapt as we play. I don’t think there Is an opening or gambit that leads to victory. I think following solid principles and developing a good eye Is vital. It’s a hard game. You will get better . Keep playing.
