Breaking 1500 Members Tournament – Update

      Hi all,

The survey results are in! Most players prefer a Swiss format and 10-minute time control. While there was interest in a 15/10 increment (including mine), I believe the 10-minute option will allow for more games in a reasonable timeframe.

Since we have many players in North America, I’ve split the tournament into two groups. The winners of each group will face off in a final. The finalists can then set a more flexible time for their match.

I’ve listed tentative starting times in UTC with the corresponding times in your local timezones. If your timezone is missing, please let me know in the comments.

      Group 1: February 16
Group 2: February 15 or 16 (still to be confirmed). I’ve included two options so far.

Volunteers: If someone in Group 2 can act as a co-host, that would help a lot, especially if the time falls outside my timezone. I can set this up in the Club for you to manage.

      Group 1 – (9:00 AM UTC, Sunday 16 February):

      • Vietnam (UTC+7): 4:00 PM; Hong Kong (UTC+8): 5:00 PM; China (CST, UTC+8): 5:00 PM; Adelaide (UTC+9:30): 6:30 PM; Oslo (UTC+1): 10:00 AM; GMT+1 (Central European Time): 10:00 AM

7-8 players (2-3 of my friends outside Breaking 1500 may join here)

      Group 2 (6 Players):

      • Option 1: Saturday 15 February 3:00 PM UTC (4:00 PM MEZ, 7:00 AM Pacific, 10:00 AM Eastern, 8:00 AM Mountain, 9:00 AM Central)

      • Option 2: Sunday 16 February: 7:00 PM UTC (8:00 PM MEZ, 11:00 AM Pacific, 2:00 PM Eastern / (2), 12:00 PM Mountain, 1:00 PM Central)

      5 players

Next, I’ll share more info about rounds and settings for the first tournament. How does this sound so far?

      Love

      • Looks good. I should be free on Feb 16 unless my wife drags me to church. *lol* — I also don’t know how the Chess.com tournament software works. Is it possible to assign people to a tournament game and then give them a timeframe to complete it? That might make it possible to do longer time controls. I.e. We do a 30 minute tournament, but each person only plays one game a week. You get matched up at the beginning of the week and you work with your opponent to find a time to play. Submit your results and the next round is paired the next week. Just an idea if people wanted to do longer time controls. Thanks for putting this together!

        • How do we sign up?

          • Lol Nate. I see what you’re saying and I think it makes sense as it would allow for much more flexibility. I think the only thing we should do is keep the time controls consistent so it’s an equal playing ground. So, we can start with 10 in the first iteration, then move to 15 / 10 increment in the next one. After that, if all goes well, I’ll put out a poll or something to see if enough people want to then try 30 min.
