My chess dot com rapid rating is 470. I decided to open a Lichess account to see how it was as a platform which gave me a starting rating of 1500. I figured I would just jump into a game to get my rating to a more accurate reflection, content with the fact I’m going to lose.

I get put up against a 1300. They play a Sicilian, I think I can remember some lines from Nelson’s rating climb videos. I hang in there already exceeding my expectations, then I blunder a rook. ‘Never resign’ I remind myself. The game goes on, adrenaline kicks in. I attack their Queen once more and they retreat, walking into a pin. I can’t believe it, I’m winning a a queen. They resign. Me, a lowly noob, beats a 1300.

Nelson, thank you for being such a good, kind and encouraging teacher.
