Getting past the 1350-1400 level is frustrating and hard. This game i felt i was doing fine and then got outplayed right around move 18. I should have played my bishop to A6 vs. E6. But i didn’t see it at first and wanted to get more support around my king. This player did several sacrifices I wasn’t expecting to open up my king. But then I felt it odd how long it took him to finish the game off almost as if he didn’t know how to play. I don’t think he was cheating but his middle game seemed awesome and then his end game took forever.

Move 14 he has 3 attackers to 2 defenders on that pawn. I like Ne7 there to stop the attack. Losing that rook was the defining moment.

Yeah, move 18-20 was when the evaluation bar swung to your opponent’s favor. But your opponent missed too many moves to make me think anything nefarious. It is more likely that he is not that familiar with end game strategy and that is why it took him so long; he missed several opportunities to take your bishop and missed most of them. I think you played a pretty solid game (I am rated 780 in rapid so my opinion may not mean much), but likely playing Be6 instead of Ba6 was the move where thing started to go south for you.

I think for the next group call Nelson should do a “What on earth is Stockfish thinking” section. Stockfish thinks the rook sacrifice on move 16 was “Brilliant!!”. Good for you, but I’m not seeing it. If I do the “Show moves” black gets both of white’s bishops, but gives up a rook and a knight in doing so. White also now has control of the wide open E file and has his queen in the middle of the board. Before that hypothetical exchange black was up in material and after the material is equal. So why does Stockfish think that rook sacrifice was brilliant? Do you recall what your thought process was at the time?

Also, on move 37 Stockfish thinks e3 is the best move for black? Is Stockfish drunk? In what world is just giving up pawns “best”? That would have just given white a passed pawn…

@keithsudermangmail-com yes I recall what I was thinking a little. If I moved my pawn up G6, he sacs bishop. Then I believe he has an almost a mate in the corner with his queen. Plus my path to run had discovered checks from the rook and I just figured time to sacrifice. I got his bishop and knight for the trade so about even.

Ya I agree sometimes I have no idea wha to see on stock fish. Would be good for Nelson to cover that. Maybe I’ll see if he can review this game on the next session.
