I’m at a loss for words and completely confused. After a 3-month steady climb from 1100 to 1420, i just experienced a 2-day free fall of 188 points to collapse back to 1232. I’m actually fairly crushed over it, as it validated my imposter syndrome related to any improvement I’ve made. Has anyone experienced similar?

I feel like months of work and study was just wasted in a flash

      • That happens to everyone, don’t feel bad. I am going through the same ups and downs right now too. I went from 800 blitz to 1060 and now back down to 900. When this happens I take a break from playing and do more studying until some gears move and things start to click again.

Go through your losses and see what you did wrong. For me when someone plays some weird opening and prevents me from doing what I want, I try to force things to happen instead of adapting and finding the best approach. Then I get tilted and play bad until I just give up for the day lol.

        • @drewfenton19gmail-com I struggled with Stonewall vs Kings Indian (which seems to have gotten very popular in the 1200-1400 rating range). I have mapped out the best approaches (either the e-file pawn break, running the h-pawn as a hook, or creating a bishop/queen battery to target the KI bishop) but it still gives me problems

        • Don’t play if you’re still on tilt. You may not even know that you are; I haven’t achieved 1300+ ELO yet; however, I was close and then dropped like a stone. I have since built back up to 1250ish and I am feeling good about my games again. I had to step back, self assess, and analyze why I was losing. It really boiled down to just not playing the best move to *my* ability. I enjoyed a few more modules from the course and watched some YouTube streams (mostly of Nelson) and reestablished my enjoyment of the game. I also turned off displaying the rating of my opponent. When my house (i.e. mental space) was in order, I started winning again and recovered most of my lost ELO gains, and more importantly, I am having fun again.

          • Though the collapse has been insane (1420 to 1203 so far) it’s occurred in blocks of games between 4-10. I’ve been taking breaks and trying to steer clear of tilt. It’s just a mental block all of a sudden like things that were so CLEAR are now just strangely unfamiliar

            • What is the Elo ratings of your opponents? I just watched one of Nelson’s streams where he lost a bunch of games in a row. However, the opponents were all similar in Elo rating so he only lost a few points per game. Maybe adjust the level range for opponents?

              • So I bottomed out at 1182 (from 1420) after 3 days. I think I had just lost focus.

Refocused and already back up to 1260
