Unless used as a surprise weapon, the Owens opening (in my opinion) is a very bad one. It has many trade-offs, even for beginners like me. I still have not found an easy opening for Black; maybe the Dutch one…

I have been working with the Hippo, which seems to let me utilize some ideas from the Owen/Modern, some from the King’s Indian Defense, but all in a very flexible way…and it confuses people into making lots of mistakes (haha)

I’ve been playing the Pirc/King’s Indian mostly, and I’m doing pretty well with that approach. I’ll break out the Owen now and then, but I think I keep running into problems because I struggle with pawn breaks and figuring out when to throw c5/d5 in.
