Ryan posted an update
I dont think ive ever been more frustrated with the game of chess. At one point today my bullet rating was down to 901 from a high of 1184 two weeks ago. And I’ve played 2,586 games of bullet this year (plus another 1,956 in other time formats) so its not like it was a new rating still normalizing.
The more i learn, the worse i play. I’ve bought Levy’s book, this course, took another course on attacking principles, and bought the opening book recommended in this course.
I KNOW I’m understanding things i didnt before…but ive NEVER played worse

I can relate. Last week, I was 820, but now down to 780. It always frustrating to watch our rating decreases because it feels like all the time we’ve spent playing chess was for nothing. We just have to remember that losing countless games is part of the process. We need to persevere to accomplish our goals.

Agreed. But 283 points in 14 days should not happen

In that case, you need to take a step back and figure out your repeated mistakes so you can learn to prevent it from happening again.

On repeated mistakes, I simply stopped “playing chess” and looking for tactics and doing blunder checks.
I realized I was trying to incorporate all these memorized opening lines and was screwing up.
Once I went back and rewatched the tactics videos in the course (and fixed a very broken Scandinavian line I was playing, my score shot up from 901 to 1025 in about 24 hours

Your comments here helped me refocus

Did regain back up to 1001 (a 100 point jump) today before the Olympic basketball started

Happens to the best of us. Compared to last year, my bullet is down over 500 elo and blitz down over 300. When I got back into chess (after playing against the computer as a child) I was around 1040 blitz and had never studied chess. I’ve been trying to improve for over 4 years and have been playing & analysing heaps, had over 70 one hour lessons with a chess coach, thousands of hours of tactics, and my elo is worse now compared to when I first tried to improve. My chess coach and chess friends just said do more tactics

You are so solid. I’m in a dogfight with you right now in that daily game. I wish I’d have checked your rating before I accepted that game! 😂😂😂
If I win I won’t get any rating bump. If I lose I’ll probably drop 100 points😂😂😂
And you’re basically rated the same as me in other time formats. It’s the ultimate no win scenario 😂

I totally thought I was playing you already!
His name is close to yours…and his ratings are all around 1300 except he’d never played daily
So it’s 400 (but he plays like a 1300…). I’m just hoping not to lose because I don’t even know how many points I’ll lose.

That blunder brother is a dangerous opponent! 🤯

I pulled a draw against him

It will likely take a lot to see improvement in bullet or blitz play to be honest. While you may be learning new things those time formats benefit from things that are in your muscle memory rather than knowledge base. If you half apply knowledge not yet in your muscle memory… well things won’t go well as a worse but consistent plan is better than an inconsistent one. Longer time controls until it becomes muscle memory and then reduce time controls again will do you wonders.
