Hi Nelson, first of all I’m enjoying the great course that you’ve put together. I’m following the course step by step and moving on once I’ve mastered it. My ELO is approximately 1100. However, I’m stuck on the Stonewall Attack and the Owen’s Defence level. I’ve repeated the modules several times now and seem to understand the concepts of the openings and the moves I should proceed with after the opponent’s response. When playing in a real game and using these openings I’m finding it difficult to apply what I’ve learned in the modules. Can you please advice on how I can resolve my problem?

      • Nej, I would say keep going with the course. The opening is just to get you off on the right foot and will rarely lead to wins just from the opening. The tactics, not blundering, and positional understanding in the middlegame is really where most of the wins will come from. I hope that makes sense!

        • Hi Nelson, thank you for your advice. It makes sense. I think I’m spending too long on the openings then concentrating on the other aspects of the game. 🙂

          • If it helps, I was STUCK around 900-1000 rating for so long because I was focusing on trying to learn openings to get an advantage, but then losing games in the mid or end game.

My rating has been on a steady climb (blitz not at 1158; bullet at 1136) ever since I started LEARNING the rest of the game (tactics, planning, end game, etc)

          • Hi Ryan, I appreciate your advice. Thanks. I’ve been spending too long on the openings and do need to move on and concentrate on the other aspects of the game. I will revisit the openings once my chess game improves. 🙂
