Question for & advice please Nelson . Just played in a ” fun although rated ” ( my words ) 4 round 3 min blitz swiss . 3 mins is generally far too quick for me , but I do get to play against much higher rated players ( I’m 847 & played in one round against a 1414 ) . In that game , although I lost on time after 30 moves , Stockfish had me 2.73 ahead ! ( Played the Owens ) .

At my level is this type of thing likely to be of benefit to me or would other game formats be better ? Thank you .

      • I would stick to the slower time controls for the serious learning, but nothing wrong with the occasional blitz game for some fun.

        • Thank you for your advice ! Finally played a rapid game on Chess.com after finishing the tactics module ( for 1st time ) , have been using Chess Royale for human games . Played Owens & won opponent was rated 1131 ( but 217 higher 9 weeks previously !! ) . Also have seen that a suspected rice cooker I lost to some time ago has finally been banned 🎉 . No points refund as yet . Really enjoying this course & appreciating more & more the effort you must have put in .

        • I hope your swiss tournament went well and sorry for this late reply.

It is definitely a good learning experience playing against higher-rated people, especially with such a big rating gap. However, many people in Blitz and Bullet chess would just play with their instincts, and not actual calculation (more like hope chess in a way). So in some way, you aren’t facing your opponent’s full strength because the don’t want to lose on time.

When I was at your level, I liked to play rapid games so I have time to think and calculate. It also means you get more exciting games (at least for me) and the full game experience. But this is entirely up to you – this is my suggestion.

          Hope this helps!

          • Thanks Jack , I do play other formats too , was just wondering how helpful or otherwise these 3 min games were for me , at this stage of learning .

            • Hi Andrew! It certainly could be helpful, when you try to play fast under time pressure (if you are low on time in a real tournament match). However, I would just suggest finding tournaments will longer time controls so you can think and spend as much time as needed – Rapid is the best for this (10 mins, 30 mins, etc.).

            • Thank again Jack , am starting to play rapid again , so , yes I think rapid will be the default game now & just blitz on occasions .
