Hi Nelson, I’d reached 800 shortly before signing up for the course but have been sliding slowly for the past few weeks. I watch many of your YouTube videos and just started the course so I think I should have the basic fundamentals ingrained into my head but I’m still forgetting to castle before move 10, not seeing free pieces, and I give many games away after taking a commanding lead because I get lost with what to do and how to take advantage of my lead. How do I make the best of this course because it’s mostly videos but I feel like I need more practice? For example: Should I want a full module and then practice what I’d learned for a few days before watching the following module? Thanks.

      • Yeah Kevin, that’s exactly what I’d do. Watch a few videos (doesn’t have to be a full module in some cases) until you feel like you have a few “aha” moments and then I’d play several games until you feel like you’re picking up on those concepts in your games.

        • Kevin, take a look at my Chess.com profile (link in my profile here). If you go to my bullet rating and look at my last 90 days, you’ll see big ratings drops followed by a corresponding recovery. Those big drops were me trying out new openings and the recoveries happened as I got more comfortable with them.

Then I’d try to learn something else and the process would occur again.

Long story, short…I find my rating will drop as I try to incorporate new openings or tactics. I just chalk it up to growth and trust that the more games I play, the more I’ll see those tactics better, and the rating will go up again.
