I wish I better understood a couple of technical things, but I’ll start with this simple one. I have usually played bots to practice, but I doubt they’re necessarily realistic. When I start a “real” game on chess.com I tend to get put with people whose ratings are much higher than mine. Is there any way to play a “normal” game of chess (one…

Yes, when you go to start a game just below the big green “Play” button will be a little “Custom” drop-down. If you click on that you will be able to select how much above/below your rating your opponent will be. I have mine set to -400 and +100.

Kwik question.
On chess.com is there a way that I can set up a chess board and to move both black and white to try different moves ?

“Analysis” is the place you’re looking for

What is the chess set in the background of Nelson’s youtube videos? Thanks!
-
Pretty sure it’s just the “Analysis” engine on chess.com. Maybe someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

To clarify, I am referring to the actual board and pieces behind Nelson. It looks like he has a couple trophies and to his left is a nice looking set.

Does anyone have any advice on how to use the Stonewall and Owens pgn’s in Chess.com to practice/drill these moves?
-
I open in notepad or any text program, copy and paste into analysis on chess dot com

Thanks for the reply. I got that far but I’m not sure how to proceed from there and Google hasn’t been my friend after that 🙂
Cheers, Paul

This should have what you need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzpELV10BZ8&t=23s
To setup the board you can step through the Stonewall or Owen’s games and at whatever point click the “Share” button and copy the FEN for that board position and then go to Learn -> Analysis -> Setup position and then pasted in the FEN.

Thanks so much, I’ll give that a try

Question with the Owens defense. After Bishop goes to B4, isn’t the most likely counter move Pawn to A3 driving the Bishop away ? What would be the best move for black ? Trade with the Knight or retreat ?

Check out this #chess game: xavierdass vs HowzitGrowing – https://www.chess.com/daily/game/720811233 I had good success trading straight away

Will check out. Thank you

Trade for the knight and take the pawn with the light colored bishop. Nelson covers exactly this situation in one of the lessons.

Got it , thanks

Hello friends! While practicing the owens opening for black, I seem to have trouble finding a home for my bishop after white plays a3 instead of Nf3, which prevents 4… Bb4.
-
I think Nelson talked about this in one of the videos, maybe the last coaching call? I like to play 4… Nf6 first, so the knight has a place to go if they play 5. e5. Then probably the bishop is going to e7. I think you need to move the knight first though. If you move the bishop to e7 first and they play e5, then the knight is kind of stuck.
