  • I love Nelson’s chess videos and have been watching his channel for years.

But sadly, as a native French speaker, I cringe each time Nelson says “en passant” and pronounces a hard T at the end.

In French, final Ts are not usually pronounced, it should be “en passan” to rhyme with “croissant”, and sounds like “pa-sonn”.

I hope one day he can fix this.

    • Sounds cooler your way

      • Telling non-French speaking people “en passant” rhymes with “croissant” isn’t really helping though as most put a hard T on croissant as well. The worst butchering of that I’ve heard is “CROY-cents” 😂🤣
But now that I know that “croissant” rhymes with “en passant” I’ll be pronouncing that properly now.

    • I hate chess. Nothing helps and I am not smart enough to figure out what I am doing wrong. It is beyond frustrating. I got up to 1207 and now 912. I have been able to have a net win streak in a month. Why does chess.com not tell you WHY some dumb random move is the best move?! Has anyone had any experience with Decode Chess AI?

      I was…

      • Forgetting about the rating and sticking with opening principles has helped me the most. Then CCT checks captures threats. None of these available then which piece needs improvement? Before any of this ask what was opponents piece guarding before he moved it? Reviewing games. Nelson has played thousands of games so just thinking in his voice…

      • I am sure the Army changed a lot since we were in. I still remember them telling us that racism doesn’t exist, we are all green. Thanks for being a brother in arms during an hour of need. Hopefully some day we can play online, we need atleast one game of Stonewall vs Owens right?@

        • Louis, it sounds like you might be a little tilted. It happens to me from time to time as well. And when it does, I generally find myself losing a lot of points and just feeling very frustrated in general. I usually need to step away for a few days and don’t think about chess at all for a bit. Usually then when I come back I’m fresh and…

      • I was about 700 ELO then I got this course. I started to be aware of any Blunders ( I could find ) I fell down to about 300 ELO. I must have been blundering everywhere, my opponent too. Now I am much more solid and climbing past 500. Maybe this game is extra hard for me lol. I took an ELO test on Lischess? They said I am 840…. I am confused…

      • Some brilliant moves that I played while taking this course.

      • How to get a brilliant move: miss a mate in 2 and take a couple extra moves to sac something THEN checkmate 😅

      • Is anyone else as inconsistent as me on puzzles ? SHEESH !!

        • Tim

That’s not too unusual, I don’t think. One thing with puzzles is to try not to guess (unless you’re just really stuck).. when I find the correct answer, 90% of the time I’m confident in it.. and if I’m not confident, it’s usually wrong.
