Hello Nelson,
- In chess.com, many of my games are often rated 2000, 1900, 1800 in the Game Reviews. And yet, my Rapid rating is still ~1100. Of the games I win, they’re often rated this way. What am I missing?
- Would you be able to prescribe or show us a structure for studying and learning a new opening? I have all the resources in 2024 that would have been the envy of the world’s best chess players ten to twenty years ago, yet my strength is still ~1100. I feel my study is poorly structured leading to wasted time and energy and ultimately poor results.
- How do you leverage computers to study and learn new openings? I use HIARCS on a Mac.
Thank you so much for putting this together. It’s great to be here. I’ve been a long-time Chess Vibes viewer. Your advice on YT resonate very much with me especially with my current level and strength. Thank you again.
Peter

Hey Peter, regarding the ratings in Game Review, I would be careful putting too much stock in that. It doesn’t do a great job of taking into consideration how complex the game was that you were playing. Sometimes I get 100 accuracy in short, very easy games where I hardly had to think at all. Then other times my accuracy is 60 something but I actually was thinking very hard and made pretty good decisions, I just missed complex tactics that stockfish found.
The bonus section of the course “Online Chess Mastery” is coming very soon and in those videos I’ll be going over how to use the Opening explorer and stockfish so I think that will help you. My plan is to get those recorded in the next week or so if possible so stay tuned.
