In the Stonewall, one of the aims seems to be to get the knight to E5 but when to do it. Should I leave it if black has a knight defending and let them go to the square first (or leave it empty) or is it best to take the initiative and move there, re-taking black’s taking knight with a pawn? I know there are many answers to this but I’m just looking for a typical move.

This is how I try to play that situation

Actually, he had a bishop defending it there. But in general, if one of his knights is on f6 and I can jump a knight into e5 (even if it can be captured, forcing me to recapture with the pawn on f4), I generally do it because after the recapture with my pawn it kicks the knight off of f6 and removes a king side defender.

Martin, if you’ve developed everything else and that’s the next step, it’s okay to initiate and recapture with the f pawn.
