So i was in the first running of Breaking 1500, and while i still havent hit 1500, my chess is SO much better. Not breaking 1500 yet is simply because once i hit about 1420 (blitz) i decided to fully scrap my comfortable d4 Stonewall that i loved to learn an e4 repertoire to force me to play more open lines and tactics for my own development.…

I hunted for a smothered mate forever and I’m in the 1300s now (1320). I was at 1420 a couple weeks ago, but hit a dip.

I use Lichess to test things out against non-bots because I don’t care about that rating. I also use it to build personal studies on openings.

I have mapped out the best approaches (either the e-file pawn break, running the h-pawn as a hook, or creating a bishop/queen battery to target the KI bishop) but it still gives me problems

Though the collapse has been insane (1420 to 1203 so far) it’s occurred in blocks of games between 4-10. I’ve been taking breaks and trying to steer clear of tilt. It’s just a mental block all of a sudden like things that were so CLEAR are now just strangely unfamiliar

I’m at a loss for words and completely confused. After a 3-month steady climb from 1100 to 1420, i just experienced a 2-day free fall of 188 points to collapse back to 1232. I’m actually fairly crushed over it, as it validated my imposter syndrome related to any improvement I’ve made. Has anyone experienced similar?

I enjoyed that game so much. Though I adopted the stonewall, I was never able to make the Owens defense work for me. This game made it look so straightforward and you had so many attacking opportunities. Thanks for sharing. That was really an outstanding game.

May have been the best combo I ever saw all the way through and I credit Nelson’s “removing the guard” tactic video for giving me the tools to see the “brilliant” rook sack that sealed the deal. I’ve watched all 20 hours of Aman’s speedrun and it gave me a much deeper understanding. Nelson’s analysis is great, but 20 hours of explained games just grants a broader understanding.

Joe, there is a wonderful series of YouTube videos (20 videos in all, each around 1 hour) that really go into a nice repetition on Stonewall (it’s a Speed Run rating climb using ONLY Stonewall as both white and black) and goes over when (AND WHY) to play certain moves in a way that locked it in for me.

Really nice recovery. Could tell you were executing a plan.

Really liked Kf2 to stop the queen invasion. You did miss a nice queen/rook fork right after that, but overall you seemed to be using discovered attacks well (especially the early one with the pawn advance that attacked both the knight and rook)

Opening principles and guidelines for pawn structure are things you should pay attention to, but you can break them if you have a reason.

In the Stonewall, you do have the backwards pawn and you do weaken your king’s protection, but it’s ok because the opening is designed to lock down the middle and rotate all your pieces for the kingside attack.…

Working my way up from 600. Played against Maxim-bot (1000) with no blunders, mistakes or misses using Stonewall. Currently at 800. 85.7 accuracy, which is a new best.

There is a very nice, in-depth series of YouTube videos that I felt complimented Nelson’s Stonewall introduction and goes into a LOT of depth. You nailed it. This is so true.

I switched from playing most of my games at night (when I’m most free) to playing my games in the morning before work and then again during my lunch break and it’s made a huge difference with focus.

Now I use nights to study chess instead. If I play at night with a friend, I only play unrated games after 8 pm

Chess is so mental…About 3 weeks ago (immediately after finishing the course, i dropped 283 rating points in 7 days (1184 down to 901). My head had too much new info i hadnt absorbed and i was trying to add it all at once. Was SO frustrated. Then…it started to feel more natural again. Ive almost recovered.

On repeated mistakes, I simply stopped “playing chess” and looking for tactics and doing blunder checks.

I realized I was trying to incorporate all these memorized opening lines and was screwing up.

The craziest thing was that Chess.com rated the first two games I played against him at 90.1% (2100 rating) and 89.6% (2100 rating) respectively.

I dont think ive ever been more frustrated with the game of chess. At one point today my bullet rating was down to 901 from a high of 1184 two weeks ago. And I’ve played 2,586 games of bullet this year (plus another 1,956 in other time formats) so its not like it was a new rating still normalizing.
