I’m finding the Stonewall Attack quite challenging to play. It’s probably me, because it’s effective in the early stages but I’ve played a few games trying it out and I keep encountering moves that throw a spanner in the works and end up playing defensively as a result.

I won the latest but it was partly because of opportunities missed by…

A game from earlier today. Both of us played a bad game, my very first move was a mistake (f2-f4 instead of e2-e4). I won on time but shouldn’t have, especially as I blundered my Queen along the way.

Given tools like the chess.com analysis page I don’t find reading PGN notation that important because you get to see moves graphically. I guess it’s like reading music scores. If you understand the basics then you can figure out what’s what in your own time. For me the most important part is figuring out *what* to do, as opposed to how to… Read more

Personally I find the openings to be less of an issue than the mid-late game. I’ve not progressed far enough into the course we’re doing here to make recommendations yet but depending on your ELO there are some fundamentals that can serve you well. That said, without knowing your ELO I’m hesitant to give advice.

Cheers. I’m not married to any openings and I find black difficult to play. I used to play the Caro-Kann a lot but it’s a bit of a ‘hunker down’ approach which I found leads to a congested board with difficulty developing in the mid-game though that may be my lack of technical acumen. My preferred strategy when playing black these days is…
