  • After getting destroyed in my first two games I’m now on a 4 game win streak. I finally got a chance to snag that e4 pawn using the Owens defense. That was cool. Other than that game, I was not able to get Owens or Stonewall fully set up and had to rely on basic chess principles. I’m 560 Elo so I think most players are just too…

  • After playing several games using Stonewall as a 500 Elo player is that at this level everyone is so unpredictable and no one has castled in 4 games. I find I have to rely quickly on basic chess principles.

Nelson, one suggestions might be making a custom video for this class where you start at 500 Elo using your AverageJoe acct on Chess.com…

    • I agree with David. I have tried the Stonewall attack and my opponents do not choose to castle. Do you have tactic recommendations if our opponents do not castle?

      • Good question, I have this on the list of things to discuss in the group coaching calls.

        • I have this same inquiry. I have yet to have a game using the stonewall opening where I can put the moves you used as an example into practice. They either don’t castle or they start bringing their queen out. Looking forward to the coaching call!

        • Nelson,

I played the stonewall defense last night and the when I pushed the pawn to f4, black’s next move was his bishop to g4 threatening my queen. I moved my knight to f3 to block but then black’s bishop took my knight and threatened the queen again. I took his bishop with my queen. Was that the right move or should I have taken his…

        • Hey Nelson,

I’m excited to be a part of this course to help me be a better chess player.

I’m sub 1,000 Elo and guilty of playing a lot of daily games to not have the pressure of the clock.

What clock do you recommend to get better at chess? I feel like I make too many mistakes with the 10 min. clock. Is it ok to play with a 20 minute or…

          • Hi David, I’m wondering too! I feel the 15|10 games are too long but the 10 min games are too short!

            1
            • Yeah I think 30 min or 15 min with 10 sec increment is a great place to start. Long enough that you can really think through the moves, but short enough you can get a game in in less than an hour.

              • Hi David, Dominic. I play the 30 min time control. I haven’t been playing long, so it’s nice having the time to think if I want it. I think you’ll be surprised how fast opponents prefer play in those games. I’ve had plenty that each player still has 20-25 mins remaining in the clock. Allows plenty of time for yourself though to think…
