I got this course immediately when it came out last year and fell in love with the stonewall. I got up to 1200 from around 1050 rapid and then hit a wall where I wasn’t improving, it almost felt like I was going backwards making very obvious blunders and mistakes. I think I was more focused on being robotic with my moves instead of playing…

Good luck, Drew!

Thanks so much for sharing your story! We’re happy to hear that the Stonewall sparked something for you early on! That jump from 1050 to 1200 is no small feat, and it speaks to the effort and consistency you put in.
Hitting a plateau is something most players face, especially around the 1100–1300 range. It’s easy to get caught in… Read more

I have noticed recently that almost every person I play when I use the stonewall, castles queenside and has the sole purpose of preventing me from playing the stonewall. This is just in the past couple days, and it’s weird. Did someone come out with an anti stonewall course that I don’t know about!?

I’m having similar experiences with the Stonewall. Since I’ve been playing it, everyone seems to know what to do about it. Either e5, or a white-squared bishop g4, h5, g6 to disrupt it. I’ve never played an opponent who blocks both bishops with his pawns. Check this out.

I want to clarify that I will continue to try the Stonewall. But I think it is important to know what concepts there are against the Stonewall. Above all, so that you can change your own concept at the right moment and not get carried away. There are people who say the Stonewall opening is bad. For me, that is complete nonsense. A game of chess…

It can be frustrating. In this game I thought I did the Stonewall well and achieved an accuracy rating of 87.1 for the opening but my opponent had a rating of 91! Neither of us played all that well and I had no blunders but 6 misses.

I need help. I find when I’m playing games I cannot see tactics or understand the position that well. However, if I watch someone else playing it’s easy to see tactics or evaluate the position. I was just watching a game and I saw a tactic to sac a knight to set up a discovered check and win their queen. I am positive I’ve had similar tactis in…

Well chess isn’t just about spotting one tactic here and there, you need to keep track of a lot of different things at once. Not blundering checkmate, not blundering any pieces, what’s your plan going to be for the next few moves, etc. When you watch someone else, you probably don’t think about all that and just look at one thing “I wonder…

For me I have a hard time sacking piece in my games but when watching others I am always like why don’t you just sack your rook. Get over the fear that if you sack a piece you are lost. I now always look at opportunities to sack piece first and if I cannot see the outcome I move on to another safer move. Also doing lots of puzzles help me…

I’m a GM when I’m not playing. Lol

Not related to the course, but last night I got to play a live game against GM Varuzhan Akobian in a simultaneous exibition. For a scrub like me to play such a high rated player was an awesome experience, and I lasted 37 moves before ultimately resigning. I channeled my inner Nelson and went for a sacrifice to open up his king. I thought I…

I like the spirit though! Go down swinging!

My problem right now is I have these spurts where I play pretty good getting 80%+ accuracy most games, seeing the board very well, and finding great moves. Then all the sudden after a week or so,my brain turns to mush and I start blundering a lot and missing easy to find moves and I’ll start having games where I am 50%+ accuracy or even less. I…

That’s why I was wondering about going “stale ” & advice on what to do !!
-
I’m pretty sure it happens to most people under 1500. If you feel tilted, go do some puzzles or play some bots to get back in the zone. Taking 1-2 days off to “reset” might be a good thing but I don’t think you can get better at anything by taking weeks off. Keep going at it !

I definitely feel like a 600 some days :/ it’s hard with my work schedule to get longer games in, but I might bump it up and try some 15l10 games.

I’ve been trying to play the Owen’s defense and 7/10 games after I play e6 they respond with a3 to stop my bishop from pinning the knight. I’m sure this may have been asked on here before, but what is the best plan going forward since I can’t play the reccommended moves?
-
t’s surprisingly rare I get to pin that knight and even if I do they can defend the pawn with the bishop. I’m looking forward to the rating climb but you’re mostly going to land in the exceptions sections of the other videos. I don’t bother to put the bishop in line with the king unless I can pin and that may be 25% of my games. For the most… Read more

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to direct you to someone else’s channel so I won’t say the name here but if you look up “black pieces speedrun” on Youtube, you can study a GM who went from 800 to 2300 using that exact opening. The same channel also has a run using the Stonewall and he explains the logic behind every move. It helped me a lot and…

Going through the tactics section again and one thing I wish was in there was defending tactically. Watching your videos on youtube there are many times you say that something is defended tactically, and if you hadn’t said that I wouldn’t have been able to see it.
It would be awesome if you could add a video to the course or do a youtube video…

First off I love this course, all the time and effort put into making it really shows.
However, after going through the tactics section I found that now when I’m playing games, I can’t help but look for every possible kind of tactic after every move. Not only am I looking for all these tactics, but trying to calculate the continuations, and do a…

Not sure how far you’ve gotten in the course but in module 10 @ChessVibes recommends working on 1 thing at a time until it becomes 2nd nature. For myself, my most important thing to master is blunder checking. So, I will continue to look for tactics but I will prioritize blunder checking and of course try to leave sufficient time to make more…

Drew, just start with the 1 or 2 move tactics. If you don’t see something right way, then move on. It’s okay that you’ll miss some more complicated ones (3+ moves) from time to time. The point is to get really good at the basic 1/2 move tactics and not use all your time each game. Eventually you’ll get to the point where the 1/2 movers are…
