Question for & advice please Nelson . Just played in a ” fun although rated ” ( my words ) 4 round 3 min blitz swiss . 3 mins is generally far too quick for me , but I do get to play against much higher rated players ( I’m 847 & played in one round against a 1414 ) . In that game , although I lost on time after 30 moves , Stockfish had me… Read more

I would stick to the slower time controls for the serious learning, but nothing wrong with the occasional blitz game for some fun.

I hope your swiss tournament went well and sorry for this late reply.
It is definitely a good learning experience playing against higher-rated people, especially with such a big rating gap. However, many people in Blitz and Bullet chess would just play with their instincts, and not actual calculation (more like hope chess in a way). So in… Read more1- View 3 replies

Just won a game against the Dr Wolf chess app using the Owens Defence ! As soon as I played b6 , up pops ” Owens Defence ” – had half a thought ” he’d ” not heard of it 🤣

Just solved a problem on Chess.com after recognising a checkmate patten instead of grabbing a free rook ! Don’t think I’d have seen it prior to the course !! Slowly ,slowly it’ll all ( well most ) sink in 😀

Just completed the decoy/ deflection on the tactics module & again on the ” advanced ” examples , I can see the first move or two , but then can’t visualise past a certain number of moves ! Is this something that might improve with time & playing , or does this ability get stymied by age ? Grateful & loving the course . The review bot said… Read more

Good question, Andrew! I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to that one. It definitely seems like the kids do have an advantage but I imagine with enough practice anyone can keep improving?

My lack of techno skills strike again !! Gone to bonuses & seen the pyramid of skills & pressed to download . When I didn’t see anything appear , pressed download again , but said already downloaded . What am I missing , if anything ?
-
Andrew,
I tried accessing the skills pyramid from my phone and also on my computer and I’m able to access the page and download the pyramid as many times as I want. Your issue is probably your device (I’m assuming a phone?) just prompting you that you’re asking it to download a file you’ve already downloaded.
Here is some general guidance, if…

The Chess Skills Tier List Bonus content isn’t formatted in an actual pyramid, it sounds like you’ve got it though. It’s a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet that lists 41 skills broken further into sub-skills, the applicable phase of the game, level of difficulty, approximate time required for proficiency, an approximate level you should…

Just wanting to react to Mark’s kind comment on my daily game that finished yesterday , but can’t as some messages have been deleted ! Have I posted something inappropriate somehow ? Please let me know ! Anyway , thank you Mark , but I blame Nelson 🤣

This happened to me too. Posted some comments both deleted for some reason. I assumed it was some sort of bug

Most likely a technical bug. Only the developers of the website would know

Thank you Aviv , leave it to them , then ! Let’s hope it doesn’t happen too often 😉

Just won a game in 12 moves with the Owens !! Think it’s a tricky opening to play against if you’re not familiar with it – thanks again Nelson . Also getting more puzzles right on Chess.com armed with some of the tactics module . It could easily be a course in it’s own right !!

I have Chess.com on my phone & also a Lenovo tablet – no computer . I would like to share the game with you , for sure , but it’s the getting it you ! I’m sure It’s simple once I know how 😤 . If all else fails , my Chess.com name is WildSam21 , perhaps you could see the game from there ? It’s a daily game , only it took about an hour . Only my… Read more

Just managed to beat Wendy (1700) bot using the Stonewall attack – even more pleasing is the reviewing bot said I found some good tactical moves ! Something must be getting through this thick skull at last 😵💫 – many thanks again Nelson !

Great, Andrew!

Starting to get success against human opponents too , especially the Owens , there are more interesting ideas than the bots tend to come up with !

Just played first game since starting the course ( 1/2 way through 4 , first time ) . Was in a 24 hour 3 min blitz arena ( World Chess Day ) on Chess.com . 3 mins is a little quick for me , but although I lost on time against an opponent rated 275 above me 1133 to my 858 , according to Stockfish outplayed them !! This course must be helping … Read more

Thanks for your video about the response to Breaking 1500 . It’s clear you’ve put an awful lot of effort , thoughtfulness & teaching ability into it . It is worth every penny ( cent !) . You are valued & appreciated , thanks again .
