I’ve been playing the Owen’s as black for a few months now, and as my rating has gotten higher, I’ve noticed that my opponents have made it difficult to attack the light squares. This game ended up working out really well though since my opponent didn’t castle right away and allowed me to chase their queen into a tough position. The fianchetto’d bishop was extremely valuable even without a typical owens defense opening! Check out this #chess game: fernando_prieto vs trisquitt – https://www.chess.com/live/game/125212729175

That was a great find leaving the knight on d5 for several turns in the early game, noticing the pin on the white queen, and then a few moves later it was awesome to see that same knight was able to land a nasty attack that ended with removing the king’s ability to castle. And then I liked the attack at the end and how that same bishop that was pinning the queen earlier did eventually get its target.
It was a very instructive game on how just playing solid moves and following principles can lead to good positions and/or tactics against opponents who break so many of the opening principles of chess. White didn’t develop their knights before bishops, they moved the queen early, and they moved both the queen and a bishop twice each in the first 9 moves. It’s hard to win like that, especially if the opponent plays solid like you did.

@knellie22gmail-com Thanks Kyle! Yeah it was an interesting game. I’ve never had the board open up like that for me during the Owen’s before.
