Nelson, thanks for the Breaking 1500 course, however you did show (and prove to be wrong) an incorrect solution to the Lucena position (know to be winning for all but the flank pawns). You show the correct solution in your youtube video from three years ago (Rook Endings).

Nelson has a video on Rook Endings from three years ago that says that you can win from the Lucena position and he shows the moves that I was talking about (which are the same moves as on Chessable courses and the same moves as on you tube videos, e.g., ChessDojo or GM Huschenbeth).

This is not a rook vs rook ending, it is a rook + pawn vs rook ending, which is a forced win if you can reach the Lucena position (I believe this means non-flank pawns). The John Bartholomew youtube video on the Lucean position also shows how white wins if the black king comes forward to bother your rook. You no longer zig-zag and block with…

With the rook on e5, you can still create the shield, you just have to endure a couple of extra checks on your king while you zig-zag your king towards the checking rook (while keeping an eye on your pawn when it could be attacked), then you can move your rook over protected by your king. If black trades rooks now, the black king will be too…

The previous white move was incorrect also – the white rook should have gone to e2 (so that if could go to e5 on the next move) – thus keeping the black king away from the pawn that we are trying to promote.

Hi Nelson, thanks for your efforts in creating this great course. I’m hoping you can address and improve “Build the Bridge” in the coaching session. I believe that getting the white rook to e5 (instead of d5) is the correct and stronger “bridge” move (7:42 into module 8.5) – thus preventing the king from ever capturing the pawn that white…

Thanks for creating this course Nelson! I did, however, find one small area for improvement (that could perhaps be corrected in the live coaching if I’m right). With regards to section 8.5, rook endings, building the bridge, I believe that this course shows how to build a [wood] bridge that only works (at promoting the pawn) if the…
