A couple of months ago I took a break from chess. I don’t have any elo goals, and just want chess to be fun again. Even though I’ve been in the depths of despair for years, I still love to cheer on my chess friends and follow their success! That’s why I’m excited to be here, I hope to get to know some of you and look forward to following your journey to 1500 <3
Here’s my background…
1987-1997 = played lots against the computer from 7 to 17 years old (no one to play against in small town New Zealand).
Nov 2019 = started playing again because I wanted to stop being a workaholic and thought chess would be a fun hobby. Didn’t know any opening names or the names of most tactics. Mostly just focused on what is my opponent going to do and try to win material, then simplify.
Apr 2020 = after a few months was chesscom 1050 blitz and 1520 daily. Then decided to study chess, but elo never improved from here.
2022 = frustrated by years of no improvement, I started seeing a chess coach. Mid 2022 my chesscom blitz was 1147 and beat a 1528, who later became a good friend. Now my blitz is 940 and that person is rated 1979.
2023 = continued with chess coach, fun lessons but still no elo growth. My chessable overview for 2023 was 904.3 hours, mostly focusing on tactics and completed around 20 beginner/intermediate courses.
2024 = reached 1100 day streak on chessable, followed the advice from my coach and friends, but still no progress. All my chess friends who I met over the years who were lower than me or around my level had gained at hundreds of elo (most max out around 1800-2000). After years and thousands of hours, I’m worse in every time control since trying to improve. I stopped playing in twitch arenas because I’m tired of getting adopted most of the time. Eventually quit my chess coach after 70-ish lessons because I didn’t want to waste their time when they could be helping someone who could improve.
2025 = ??? (let’s find out together)
