    Nelson,

What is the best way to avoid a black pawn on e4, which can be very annoying as it prevents the rook lift and other moves.

In fact, the main question is: how do we deal with a black knight on e4 (usually coming from f6)?

If we have a white knight on d2, it does not seem to be a good idea to take the black knight on e4.

    It does…

    • If you can, your goal in the opening should be to prevent any of blacks pieces/pawns from getting to e4, while at the same time controlling e5 with your pawns so your knight can eventually get there. Your light square bishop and knight on d2 should always be preventing their knight from getting to e4. The only exception is if they copy…

I wonder about chess.com bots. Just played against Ali-Bot (1400) I won. I made no blunders, but he made two and his game was rated 550! pwstamps

    • Find the mate!

Nelson, Thank you for a great course last night!

Find the mate! I heard you say that for practically each game and you almost always found something in just a few moves! This is one of my weaknesses! Good players like you seem to find them right away. What is the best way to practice? Thanks! Pierre

    • Nelson, I am one-third through the chapter on tactics, which I need to work on because the middlegame is my main weakness. Your examples are complex, even at the Intermediate level, and I am getting frustrated. I have studied other courses on tactics in the past few months, and my puzzle level on chess.com and Lichess is decent. Comments?

      • My advice would be to keep going. Sometimes, I want to do some puzzles and I can’t find the solution. It may be tempting to get mad, but I suggest using analysis after each puzzle. Try analysing Stockfish’s suggestions and your moves to see why. they were correct/incorrect.

On Lichess, you get unlimited puzzle tools (normal puzzles, puzzle…

      • Pierre, the “levels” in the tactics videos are just supposed to be rough estimates, so don’t get down on yourself if some of the intermediate seem to be more difficult sometimes. Also, it’s not about speed and how fast you can go through them, but about making sure your brain learns the new patterns. So don’t feel bad if you have to go over…

        • Hello Nelson, Thank you for your kind response. In this course and on YouTube, unlike most other teachers, it is obvious that you want to help lower-ranking players. I appreciate that! I have skipped the tactics chapter for now and will return to it later. I hope that this course will help me improve and reach 1500! My main issue is that…

        • Owen’s defense tips 800-1200. In the London setup, for example, I wonder about the validity of the move f4 to support the Knight on e4. Stockfish thinks it is a bad idea, which I would have ignored, but I just played the Owen defense against a strong player who completely demolished me after f4. Thoughts?

          • I’m guessing there was a specific reason stockfish didn’t like it in your game. In general, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with it. If you can include the link to the game I’ll be able to give you a better answer.

Also, in my post, I meant f5 (not f4)

              • I’m REALLY struggling with Owen’s vs players that play both center pawns out and contest the center without blundering the e4 pawn. I’m finding I get crowded down tight very quickly.

I can demolish slower playing players below say 1300, but having a lot of issues creating space above that

              • 100% kudos for presenting it and the errors are entirely mine, no doubt. My comment was just what I’m struggling with.

Nelson made a comment about putting Be7 if white defends against early Bb4 and that seems to provide a playable line vs the specific issue I was having.

              • Thank you, Nelson, for providing us with the PNG for the Stonewall and Owen openings. I am ready to review the openings by opening them in the library. What is the best way to study the main line and sidelines presented?

                • Just try to remind yourself of the main ideas and the WHY behind the different moves. That’s more important than memorizing the exact move orders.

                • Lesson 2.6: Developing Tactical Awareness chapter is just GREAT.

I play the Italian, and I think I have fallen for the bishop pin in the past without seeing the tactic, even after reviewing the game (I review all my games). This was very well explained. The queen tactic on the Sicilian is something I will need to try!

                  I will need to review…

                • 1500! This was a fascinating chart you showed about people at different levels on Chess.com. How does it compare to Lichess? I like Lichess. One of the reasons is that you can converse with the opponent. Also, you can play in Zen (non-rated) mode. What do you think about Zen mode? On Lichess, I usually play against players at the…

                  • I found this chart for lichess: https://lichess.org/stat/rating/distribution/rapid

It appears that the rating distribution is much higher on lichess which lines up with my experience as well. I believe the chess.com ratings are much closer to what you can expect if you go to OTB (over-the-board) tournaments and get an official rating. This…

                  • Thank you for your kind and detailed response. The chart is handy, and I discovered a “hidden”place on Lichess I did not know about!

I believe the difference is that chess.com starts your rating at 1000 (not sure if that is still the case?) and Lichess at 1500. Also, the Lichess has a temporary rating. It is followed by a ? For example, 1486? …
