Nelson – nice course – I have a question re the Stonewall. What’s the best response if on move 3 Black moves his King’s pawn to e5? I know you should take the pawn with your own, but what are the best moves to preserve the Stonewall setup? THANKS

Unfortunately, after the d4 pawn is removed, the game will start to resemble something very different than the stonewall in most cases. But there’s not really an alternative, because if black is set on playing e5 super early, you can’t really stop them unless you play f4 on move 2. The issue with that is it delays the bishop to d3 which means black is more likely to either get Ne4 and Bf5 played. It’s the same with ANY opening though, you can’t always get the exact positions you want, you have to be able to adapt to your opponent’s opening choices as well. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks for the reply, Nelson. I use Lichess to work through that permutation and others to know how to proceed.
