I’m having trouble progressing from 900 -> 1000. I find two different things happening 60%-70% of the time.
1) My opponents play fast and thwart my threats and I get flagged.
2) My opponents play fast and I find a tactic and they have 20 minutes on the clock to my 5.
Bottom line, I need to play more quickly while still being accurate. This…

Congrats on grinding to 900 and playing longer time control games online. For time management I would recommend one or two things. 1) Try to play into openings that you know. If you know the first 8-15 moves of your opening you should have plenty of time in the middlegame. 2) Create an internal process for each turn (Nelson talks about it in…

One thing I do as a drill is to play bots with a 10 minute or 15/10 time control. The bots always finish with like 9:30 on their clock, but It helps me work on time management.

I try to move a little faster In very familiar territory. Then when I am In the weeds I use that time to think it through. Losing to the clock is a Bummer =)

Hey Nelson, while examining analysis lines for the stonewall, I often see C4 pointed out as the best move over C3. What are your thoughts on this? Is there a place for C4 in certain circumstances?

HI Nelson, I’ve been playing the stonewall pretty consiistently now and the analysis board is very often recommneding C4 instead of C3. Do you have any recommendatons about when C4 might be better strategically?

Hi Nelson,
In your coaching call you mentioned that winning 50% of your games was a large win percentage because draws should be about 25% of your game results. However, I hardly ever draw when playing in a chess.com 15/10 game. I usually either win or lose on time. I’ve tried to play 30 minute games, but even then i usually either win or…

Yeah Richard, draws increase with rating I believe. Not unusual for lower/intermediate players to rarely get draws.

Hi Nelson, I was just playing the stonewall any my opponent immediately played e5. I think messed things up by responding e3. I don’t see a way to avoid not having that pawn in the middle of my stonewall unless I take it…

I can’t see a button to follow. I have gotten this and want to see the answer.

i’d also like to know what to do in the englund gambit

Yeah unfortunately if they play e5 immediately (Englund Gambit) there isn’t really a way to play the stonewall any more. You just need to take the pawn and play chess from there. The good news is you will have a slight advantage but there are still a few tricks to be aware of in the Englund Gambit. For example if they ever play Qe7, watch out…

Check out this #chess game: RyanLLeBlanc vs tfc600 – https://www.chess.com/live/game/116042415775
I messed up by taking the queen first on the trade, but otherwise here’s a way to refute the Englund

Finally back above 600. I had a string of losses before the course that took me from 650 to 560. So far having a solid game plan and go to openings has helped alot.

Good to hear , well done !!

Keep going, Richard!

Finally above 650. I feel like there’s a wide variance of player with an ELO between 600-700. The last two games I played were give aways.

I’ve been playing the chess.com 1600 bot trying to get a handle on the Owens before taking on a real game. The engine almost always defends the week pawn on e4 with bd3. It almost never brings out the night to c3 to pin. The bots 4’th move is usually bg5, preventing my queens pawn push. I know the average player won’t make these moves, but…
-
If you can’t go Bb4 (because there’s no knight on c3 to attack) then that bishop usually goes to e7 instead. Then you can castle kingside and usually strike at the center with either d5 or c5 depending on what white is doing.

Thanks Nelson! I’ve won the last 4 games I’ve played using the Owens and the Stonewall. My rating is 550-580 and my opponents mostly didn’t know how to handle them and resigned once I got a positional advantage or they blundered. However, I got checkmate on the last, which was a great game.
