Hey Nelson & people of the community! Semi-related question –
I’ve been slowly improving and building up my rank (to around 1200) and I’m finding that lately I’m feeling a slight anxiety before pressing the “Play” button and getting into a game, it’s less about the rating and more about “oh wow I’m going to meet a tough player and get…

I’ve been doing square breathing right before I start games. I just do it for a few minutes until I “feel it”, then I put on some music I like and play. I feel like I’ve been playing a lot better by doing this.

I find that I don’t play as many games as I should because I think if I don’t play I can’t loose, but when I do play I have so much fun, it’s a really bad habit lol.
Try and remember it’s just a game and we’re all learning and it doesn’t matter if you lose just learn from the mistakes, have fun and In time you’re rating will follow.

Imagine if you were about to play Nelson in a friendly game. Hopefully you’d be thinking, “I’m going to try and do my best, it I’m sure to learn a few things this game!”
Go in with that mindset, and sometimes you’ll lose and learn something, and sometimes you’ll win (and often still learn something).

I think we all have a bit of this so you’re not alone!
I think Tim has the right idea, we are just students of the game and we will win and lose and our rating will go up and down but hopefully with a gradual increase. I lost a couple of games the other day but I got so much out of the game reviews after and got a nice win today off the back…

Hey Nelson, thank you for putting the course together!
Question –
I’m about to hop into module 4 (tactics) and was wondering what is the best way to balance my study/game time: I have about 2-3 hours a day to dedicate to chess, and between practicing tactics, playing games and light-studying openings I’m trying to form a schedule that will…

Looks like the final section of the tactics module may answer this (“Lesson 4.22: Where, When, & How To Study Tactics”) but I’m not there yet. I’d just watch through the module and press pause when Nelson tells you to (lots of practicing opportunities in the videos)
-
Great insight. I’m working through an extensive tactics workbook on Chessable so I wonder how to blend that in – I’ll get through the module and see if there are some answers there. I wish there was a resource for a “weekly schedule” that would put some structure to learning/playing chess.

Hey Omer, I’ve always personally tried to go with roughly 50/50 split of studying vs playing. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer here though, just make after you have some “aha” moments from studying that you then take some time and play games to give you the opportunity to put that knowledge into practice.
