Opening Fundamentals

The better you start your games, the more likely you are to force your opponent into weaker positions, blundering, and making costly mistakes…

Which is why we’ll spend two full Levels studying this critical part of the game!

We’ll start by learning the principles behind a great opening, so you’re better able to make the right moves even if your opponent doesn’t do what they’re “supposed” to do.

Here’s some of what you’ll learn:

  • Memorizing Mistakes: It’s impossible to memorize every single move your opponent might make at the start of the game – I’ll show you how to “80/20” any opening so you focus on the most important moves and master it faster
  • 8 Opening Principles: Learn the why behind the opening so you make better decisions when things don’t go to plan – You’ll also be able to spot early opponent mistakes so you can take advantage of them later in the game
  • Advanced Openings: The higher your rating, the more every little advantage counts! I’ll share some of my favorite advanced early game strategies like delayed castling and pawn sacrifices to get that extra edge on your opponent
  • Spotting Tactics Faster: A lot of intermediate players miss obvious tactics that show up in the opening phase of the game – Learn the most common early phase tactics so you’re more aware of them when they happen in your games

By the end of Level 2, you’ll already have dozens of new strategies to play during the opening phase of the game, which will lead to a much stronger position as you transition into the middlegame.

The Perfect Openings For White And Black

After working with over 6,000 students in my online chess courses, I’ve discovered the fastest way for a student to break 1500 is by learning ONE opening for white and black. 

This way you can spend more time mastering every aspect of the opening, instead of learning multiple openings on a superficial level.

So in Level 3, we’ll dive deep into one of the best openings for white, then do the same for black, and show you how to use each as your ELO rating rises.

Here’s some of what you’ll learn:

  • The Perfect Opening For White: Want a simple, effective opening that’s easy to learn and light on theory? Yet powerful enough that grandmasters use it too? I’ll breakdown the moves and show you why it works at each rating level
  • The Perfect Opening For Black: Learn a less common opening for black that’s easy to memorize and likely to catch your opponent off-guard – Forcing them out of their normal opening routine and into early mistakes
  • < 800 ELO Opening Hacks: If you’re under 800, learning queen sacrifices and advanced pawn structures is a waste of time! I’ll show you exactly what you need to know to hit the 1000+ level as fast as possible
  • Intermediate Openings: Once you hit the 800 to 1200 level your opponent is more likely to know what you’re trying to do – I’ll share some of my favorite strategies to keep them second guessing their plan and force them into deadly mistakes
  • 1500+ Opening Strategy: When you break 1500+ ELO, there’s an entirely new level of detail you need at the start of the game – I’ll help you find those 1% moves that stack up to a massive advantage later in the game

By the end of Level 3, you’ll never again question if you’re using the right opening, and be able to confidently start your games with a game plan to crush your opponent faster.

Middlegame Tactics

If you want to master the middlegame, learning how to spot and implement tactics is a key skill of the game. 

So next we’ll fine-tune your focus by learning 22 of the most effective middlegame tactics to go on the offensive after the opening.

Here’s some of what you’ll learn along the way:

  • Forks, Pins, Skewers, and More: These are some of my favorite tactics for forcing your opponent into uncomfortable situations – Leading to more mistakes, more blunders, and more winning games
  • Discovered Checks & Attacks: Another great way to stack the pressure on your opponent is using “discovered” checks and attacks – I’ll show you multiple examples of how to use these at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels
  • Key Piece Sacrifices: Sometimes the only way to get the advantage is by sacrificing one of your key pieces – I’ll show you how and when to make these brilliant moves
  • Automatic Tactics: If you’re able to spot tactics in puzzles but not in your games, you need to improve your Tactical Awareness – I’ll show you how to make the moves automatic when tactics show up in your games

By the end of Level 4, you’ll have an arsenal of new middlegame tactics to play in your games and know exactly how to spot and unleash them on your opponent!

But sometimes your position doesn’t lead to an obvious tactic, which is why you also need to learn…

Middlegame Positional Strategy

The second key to mastering the middlegame is knowing how to strengthen your position while weakening your opponent’s – Which is what positional strategy is all about! 

So next we’ll learn how to create a game plan that gives you the perfect balance between going on the attack and defending your position as the game evolves.

Here’s some of what you’ll learn:

  • Steinitz Strategy: From the creator of positional strategy himself, learn the strategic rules for attacking and defending each position – I’ll also show you how to simplify your strategy so you always know what the next best move is
  • Powerful Pawns: Don’t underestimate the power of your pawns! I’ll show you multiple powerful pawn formations and how to identify weaknesses in your opponent’s pawn structure
  • Strong vs. Weak Squares: Being aware of weak squares and “color complexes” gives you an advantage in both positional and tactical strategy – I’ll show you how to find the weak squares and attack them
  • When NOT To Trade Pieces: I see way too many intermediate players getting stuck and just start trading pieces without a strategy – I’ll show you when it’s right to trade pieces and when it’s better to move into a more defensive position
  • Positional Sacrifices: Not all sacrifices are tactical, you can use them when playing a more positional game as well – I’ll share the most common scenarios for when to unleash this powerful move

By the end of Level 5, you’ll now have a rock-solid foundation in both tactical and positional strategy and never again get stuck in the middlegame wondering what to do next.

No matter how good your game is going, all it takes is one critical mistake where you lose your queen or miss a mate and the game is over! 

Which is why Level 6 might be the most important of them all!  You’ll learn my step by step process for avoiding blunders and costly mistakes.

  • The MOST Important Move: Most games are won or lost due to 1 or 2 major mistakes – I’ll show you the most common mistakes players make at the <800, 800 to 1200, and 1200+ level so you can easily avoid them in your games
  • Blunder Prevention: Get a simple 5 step process that I use EVERY move I make that completely removes blunders from your game
  • The Path To 2000+ ELO: Learn from my experience of getting stuck at the intermediate level for far too long because I focused on my own strategy instead of prioritizing not making mistakes (And how fixing this sky-rocketed my results!)
